About NAMI Davidson Co: NAMI Davidson Co. is an affiliated chapter of the National Alliance of Mental Illness. NAMI is the largest peer-to-peer organization in the country. It provides support, education, advocacy, and awareness for people with mental health issues and their families. NAMI Davidson Co. provides free evidence-based support groups, education classes, individual, and policy advocacy; and general, faith, multicultural, and youth outreach. The agency is also a reliable source of information and referral services in the mental health field. Most services are free. Though outreach is formally offered throughout Davidson County, at least 30% of individuals served come from throughout Middle Tennessee and the United States. Services are offered with compassion, dignity, and a goal of empowerment toward personal potential.

The Youth Engagement and Outreach Coordinator will represent and initiate NAMI Davidson Co. on college campuses, select high schools, and community venues that include, but are not limited to faith communities, government service entities, courts, civic and service organizations. The role of this individual is to foster mental health awareness, education, and advocacy. This will be accomplished through the fostering of NAMI on Campus Clubs, networking, and collaborative engagement with campus-related organizations, and other organizations in the general community. Networking and engagement activities will amplify mental health awareness, stigma-busting, and knowledge of behavioral health resources.  

Part-time Position: minimum 20 hours per week. In-office Mondays, and other days flex as determined by scheduled events, will include some evenings and weekends, with prior coordination of the Executive Director.

Job Responsibilities

Duties:

  • Prospects and assists in the organization, support, and maintenance of NAMI on Campus Clubs in local colleges and selected high schools.
  • Mental health awareness activities and presentations at colleges, high schools, and community venues. Forms/maintains connections with all local colleges to continue education and advocacy activities.
  • Presents on youth and mental health and NAMI Davidson youth programs as requested.
  • Represents/Participates in TDMHSAS SOCAT (Systems of Care Across Tennessee) meetings, ACE Nashville meetings, TCCY (Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth), and other networks related to children, families, and youth as prioritized with the Executive Director.
  • Effectively coordinates with other staff for needed support of this position, including statistics maintenance and reports, and in support of related outreach.
  • Represents the agency at conventions, outreach fairs, etc.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding general agency services.
  • Maintains records and statistics on activities, and as required by grantors if needed.
  • Participates in fundraisers and is responsible for bringing NAMI on Campus Club members and others into the annual NAMIWalks Davidson County event as fundraisers, volunteers, social media drivers, and mental health awareness promoters.
  • Reports to the Executive Director.
  • Other duties as requested.

Qualifications

Qualities:

  • Compassion and empathy for youth and families of children with behavioral health issues.
  • Comfortable and/or experienced in navigating college campuses and systems.
  • Comfortable working with people who may be socially atypical.
  • Natural problem solver.  
  • Able to adapt and flex with activities of the day, or situations that arise.
  •  Experienced in diffusing crisis.
  • Well organized, good mobility, willingness, and ability to work in multiple environments.
  • Knowledge of NAMI programs, or the ability to train in current models.
  • Good networker, and a comfortable public speaker. Volunteer leadership skills.
  • Certified Family Support Specialists and Certified Peer Recovery Specialists are both welcome.
  • Youth engagement, community organization, or juvenile justice experience a plus.
  • ACES and Building Better Brains knowledge or training appreciated.
  • Multilingual, especially inclusive of Spanish, Kurdish, Egyptian, or Arabic, is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degrees in psychology, social work, public policy, sociology, nursing, or teaching, are all welcome.
  • Personal/peer experience is relevant. Self-knowledge and a resilient spirit are especially appreciated. Non-judgmental.
  • Respect for people in a recovery journey, personally, or as a family member, and a desire, or history of support and advocacy for their rights and needs within systems are valued in this role.

Requirements:

  • Effective, professional, and empathetic communicator, utilizing discretion as needed
  • Willing to train in youth presentation models and NAMI on Campus requirements, and to recruit and support the training of others in the same while maintaining the fidelity of national models.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suites i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher
  • Knows, or is willing to learn about, Google Docs/Drive, Dropbox, and other data entry or data management programs. Comfortable with Texting.
  • Experienced in the use of general office technology i.e. printer/copier/scanner/fax.
  • Well organized, and neat with an ability to prepare, collate, organize, and maintain files.
  • Willingness and ability to establish new professional relationships to further program goals.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Reliable transportation.
