URBAN FORESTRY OPERATIONS MANAGER

The Urban Forestry Operations Manager reports directly to the Field Operations Division

Manager. This role supports the Compact across multiple programs including green infrastructure design and installation as well as supervising crew leaders and members. The Urban Forestry Operations Manager supports the Tree Maintenance Program and the Root Nashville campaign and is an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking to make a positive impact on the environment.

Schedule:

This role spends 60 – 80% of their time outdoors depending on the season.  Monday – Friday.  Occasionally, weekend work is required to support tree planting or other events.

Job Responsibilities

Tree Maintenance, 60%

  • Operate the Tree Care Program’s day-to-day watering from May – September which includes proactive communication with contract holders and regular reporting 
  • Develop driving routes on WorkWave software and operation schedules for tree care contracts
  • Implement tree care activities in winter and spring, including mulching, pruning, and dead tree removal
  • Support communication projects and survivability research as needed
  • Work with Metro partners and community members to develop tree plantings on public property through the Tree Bank

Root Nashville (20%)

  • Assist in the planning and execution of the Cumberland River Compact tree planting
  • Assist in tree delivery activities from October through March
  • Assist in program execution and managing crews during the delivery season

Green Infrastructure (10%)

  • Assist as needed in Green Infrastructure initiatives by coordinating with GI program managers and the Field Operations Division Manager

General (10%)

  • Assist Field Operations Division Manager in the hiring, evaluation, supervision, and scheduling of crewmembers
  • Implement and execute safety training protocol
  • Ensure that equipment is in good working order and that it is inspected weekly
  • Ensure that the operations facility is clean, orderly and well-maintained
  • Assist in event preparation and planning as it relates to fieldwork and field materials

Qualifications

  • This position is a mix of field and office work. A successful applicant will enjoy working outside in all seasons.
  • Ability to consistently lift 50 pounds
  • Well-organized, detail-oriented, and resourceful, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks, assignments, and priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, G Suites, and social media platforms
  • Experience with engines, pumps, trailers, trucks, etc
  • 3+ Years of industry or relative experience and training
  • Horticultural knowledge, either educational or experiential
  • Quick learner on other software platforms
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff, external partners, and tree nurseries
  • Must be a team player and also be able to work independently
  • Supervisory experience
