Job Summary

Under the direction of the Day Program Coordinator, the Special Education Teacher directly engages with adult students in a classroom setting to foster learning, oversee work performance and student learning objectives, track student progress, manage assistive and information technology, develop lesson plans, and promote the growth of social and cognitive skills within a nurturing environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a safe and healthy learning environment for adult learners with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
  • Designs and implements developmentally appropriate lessons with specific attention to differentiated instruction, varying levels of student abilities, appropriateness, and specific student learning goals
  • Maximizes classroom instructional time to the greatest extent possible
  • Utilizes technology in the classroom to the greatest extent possible
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding student(s) educational, medical, personal care needs, and family information (FERPA and HIPAA apply to all students/families)
  • Is responsible for monthly student progress monitoring, data collection, and edits of monthly teacher anecdotal notes for their students assigned
  • Is a Case File Manager for a portion of the student population
  • Assists in training and utilizing classroom paraprofessionals and/or volunteers
  • Accompanies students on weekly field trips
  • Assists with planning and executing various student parties and activities throughout the year
  • May serve as a member of the Student Admissions Team

Qualifications

  • Education: A minimum bachelor’s degree in special education or equivalent higher education from an accredited college or university with teacher certification
  • Experience: Previous experience working with individuals with I/DD in a classroom setting; previous experience working with adults with I/DD is preferred
  • Should demonstrate a strong passion and enthusiasm for working with the disability community and a commitment to supporting individuals with I/DD on their journey to fulfilling their full potential and living the life they choose for themselves
  • Should be forward-thinking, keeping up with current trends, and providing creative insight into new opportunities for learning
  • Effectively communicate using both verbal and written methods
  • Demonstrate analytical problem-solving and sound judgment skills
  • Familiarity with diverse learning approaches and proficiency in assessing students’ strengths (intellectual, physical, emotional, and social) to determine best practices in teaching and learning
  • Knowledge of behavior analysis and modification techniques (ABA)
  • Thorough attention to detail and organized documentation of necessary information
  • Flexibility to adjust plans at short notice in response to sudden changes and unforeseen circumstances
  • Proficient with Windows-based operating systems and software
