Job Summary

The Nashville After Zone Alliance (NAZA) is a partnership between the Nashville Public Library, Metro Nashville Public Schools, the Mayor’s Office, and more than 20 youth development organizations across Nashville. NAZA’s mission is to increase equitable access to afterschool and summer learning experiences that help Nashville youth thrive and develop to their full potential. We do this by funding youth development organizations to provide high-quality, free-of-charge programs to middle school youth as well as by strengthening the capacity of the youth development community through professional development, evaluation services, and technical assistance to impact the learning experiences of youth.

NAZA seeks to hire a Youth Advisor to support activities of the NAZA Youth in Action! an initiative that was developed by the Coordinator of Youth In Action! The Youth Advisor will be supervised by NAZA Partnerships Manager and will work in close partnership with the YIA Coordinator to support the initiative.

This opportunity has an estimated level of effort of 14 hours a week on average for up to 45 weeks during 2023-2024 (not to exceed 630 total hours). The hourly rate is $15.

Job Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Outreach
    • Working with the NAZA Youth In Action! Coordinator and NAZA Communications and Events Manager to ensure all available spots for youth within the initiative are retained through assisting in recruiting, interviewing, and selecting youth and ensuring that a replacement is identified should a member discontinue their engagement for any reason
    • Ensuring ongoing communication with youth in the initiative to support their success within the team or with their paired NAZA-funded after-school program sites, while gathering information in the community, and while engaging in NAZA Youth In Action!
    • Conduct community outreach by managing community partnership requests and engaging relevant community stakeholders
  • Site Visit & Meeting Support
    • Ensuring that weekly NAZA Youth In Action! meetings are organized with clear agendas, meeting minutes, facilitation, etc. The Youth Advisor will serve as a secondary adult supporter who can work with youth members to determine the methods to ensure this.
    • Help facilitate key annual events such as the YIA retreat, youth summit, orientation, and shadowing visits, as well as weekly events such as *site visits and YIA leadership team meetings, and quarterly events such as partner meetings, youth skill-building opportunities, and other relevant youth-led events.
      • *The Youth Advisor is expected to make a minimum of 3 NAZA-funded program visits a week, aiding Youth Community Leaders with the creation and implementation of their youth-led community projects in partnership with their paired NAZA-funded programs.
  • Vision Implementation
    • Support activities under “Nashville’s Vision for Holistic Youth Development”, especially those related to Youth Leadership. The Youth Advisor will work with the NAZA Youth In Action! Coordinator to keep youth voice at the center of the Vision and make recommendations on IMLS activities as appropriate.
    • Co-coordinate the quarterly Youth Matters Committee meetings in partnership with NAZA team members (including agenda setting, facilitation, logistics, etc.)
    • Assist in the planning and facilitation of youth-led community events, especially as it relates to the implementation of “Nashville’s Vision for Holistic Youth Development ”. This will include creating and circulating a calendar of events related to youth voice activities and updating ongoing resources within the youth leadership toolkit. 
  • Reporting
    • Track and record significant activities of all Youth In Action! teams and members. Work with the NAZA Events and Communications Manager to create monthly progress reports on the activities of YIA, including quarterly narrative reports and a culminating year-end report that are sharable and digestible for NAZA partners, staff, and the broader community.
    • Developing, circulating, and managing documents associated with the NAZA Youth In Action! initiative and making edits as requested;
  • Administrative
    • Communicating with NAZA’s Youth In Action! Coordinator and Partnerships Manager, and IMLS Project Coordinator as needed for guidance, feedback, and to keep them informed of the initiative’s progress—ongoing communication will ensure that activities are carried out through the NAZA Youth In Action! initiatives are reviewed and approved by NAZA.

Qualifications

Minimum requirements: 

  • Must be between 18 and 25
  • Must have graduated from high school
  • Experience with project management is preferred
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills
  • Excellent self-management and skills to interact with near-peers
  • Existing driver’s license
