Job Summary

Consistent with the Christian mission and Vision of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Literacy Specialist, the Y-Literacy Director will assume all duties necessary to promote, organize, and administer the Y-Literacy program in South Nashville. Responsibilities include all aspects of program implementation including volunteer and student recruitment, community partnership management, data collection, and budget management.

Job Responsibilities

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Model and put into practice behavior that supports inclusion and diversity
  • Direct volunteer-based after-school reading intervention program to improve program participant’s reading skills
  • Work directly with the Literacy Specialist in developing programming, planning, and overseeing general program operations
  • Recruit, train, and retain volunteer reading tutors from a variety of recruitment sources
  • Work with Metro Nashville Public Schools and other community organizations to recruit eligible participants.
  • Conduct pre-test/post-test analysis to gauge children’s reading level
  • Serve as a resource to tutors, parents, students, and staff by providing reading enrichment opportunities
  • Help connect families and parents to other resources in the area such as public libraries, educational opportunities, and events
  • Assist the family of the struggling reader by providing resources such as a lending library and workshops to help guide parents in their role as the first teachers of the reader
  • Represent YMCA programs in the community for the purpose of building collaborative relationships, which strengthen programs.
  • Represent the YMCA programs in the community by attending and hosting booths at schools for open houses, club fairs, and community outreach events to strengthen the program’s presence and collaborative partnerships in the community
  • Participate in special events, activities, and meetings in which the Y-Literacy program is involved, including staff meetings, training, and assigned committees
  • Track written information on all participants and volunteers in compliance with company policy and grant requirements
  • Input data in a timely manner and follow grant guidelines established by various funders
  • Manage all grant, budget, variance reports, and forecasting within the guidelines of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee
  • Coordinate, maintain, and secure space for the program – both on and off the YMCA facility
  • Participate in YMCA volunteer programs and the Annual Giving Campaign
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, members, and participants to create a culture of service within our program sites

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

  • Must present a professional image possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software programs, as well as the ability to use most office equipment, is required
  • Ability to travel to multiple locations and ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Bachelor’s degree with literacy-related courses preferred
  • Spanish speaker preferred
  • Minimum 1-year experience in child development or related experience preferred; background in youth development

Certifications Required:

  • Before the start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Within 30 days of hire: CPR/ First Aid/ AED
  • Within 30 days of hire: Raiser’s Edge training
  • Within 60 days of hire:  Listen First training

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand; walk on uneven surfaces; sit; handle or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level is usually minimal to moderate.
