Job Summary

The forensic interviewer will conduct interviews of alleged victims of child sexual abuse, substantial sexual abuse, and severe physical abuse to obtain accurate and reliable information to be used to make child protection, criminal offense, therapeutic, and intervention decisions.

Agency Objectives

Ensure that a cooperative, multi-disciplinary team delivers comprehensive services to child physical and sexual abuse victims and their families in a child-focused, neutral-base facility.  By providing coordinated services through cooperation among the various disciplines, the center will ensure that each child will be protected from further victimization.  The Child Advocacy Center will ensure the development and implementation of child physical and sexual abuse prevention and will provide community education.

The forensic interviewer will conduct interviews of alleged victims of child sexual abuse, substantial sexual abuse, and severe physical abuse to obtain accurate and reliable information to be used to make child protection, criminal offense, therapeutic, and intervention decisions. 

Job Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities to be carried out within a 37.5-hour work week

  • Complete the 40-hour training specific to child forensic interviewing conducted by a qualified agency using a nationally recognized forensic interviewing model.
  • Coordinate interview schedules with law enforcement and child protective services investigators.
  • Conduct interviews of children following the established forensic interview protocol in cases of alleged severe physical abuse, sexual abuse, and substantial risk of sexual abuse for children ages three (3) through seventeen (17) and children under the age of three as deemed appropriate.
  • Obtain information regarding traumatic history in a manner that is legally defensible and minimizes stress to the child.  Document in written format and distribute as determined by the Child Protective Investigative Team (CPIT) Protocol.
  • Participate in Child Protective Investigative Team review meetings.
  • Provide testimony in pertinent court proceedings.
  • Provide and compile data for tracking reports.
  • Train and/or consult with other CPIT professionals in the performance of the child interviewing techniques, the most current research, and controversies relevant to court testimony.
  • Participate in peer review assessments and supervisory evaluations.
  • Attend periodic statewide meetings for Forensic Interviewers as scheduled.
  • Maintain files in compliance with legal, regulatory, and contract requirements.  Be responsible for the secure storage of interview files.
  • Serve as a member of CPIT and perform duties as required by TCA 37-1-607.
  • Complete a minimum of 15 hours annually in continuing education pertaining to child abuse and neglect.
  • Develop and complete required statistical reports.
  • Other duties as deemed appropriate by the executive director.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a field related to social science, education, criminal justice, nursing, psychology, or other helping professions; a master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience equivalent to three (3) years of full-time professional work in one or a combination of the following: child protective services, criminal justice, clinical evaluation, forensic interviewing, or other comparable work with children, demonstrated professional knowledge of child abuse and neglect and child development (through course work, professional training, or higher education) and demonstrated experience with interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • The interviewer shall have no criminal history as determined through a criminal background check.
  • Must adhere to confidentiality policy and procedures.
