Job Summary

The Family Advocate is responsible for coordinating client services and tracking client cases. The Family Advocate works as a team along with Department of Children’s Services, law enforcement and the district attorney’s office to assist with cases regarding child sexual abuse victims and non- offending parents and guardians. The Family Advocate may make referrals to Our Kids for forensic medical exams or other services, as necessary. The Family Advocate works with the Executive Director to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Child Advocacy Center.

Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Client Services:

  • Completes initial intake and needs assessment with clients.
  • Provide information about mental health services for the child and non-offending parents at forensic interviews of child abuse victims.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with at-risk families by initiating and maintaining regular client contact.
  • Provide support to non-offending caregivers in the means of providing or linking to resources such as housing, transportation, financial, food and any other services as deemed necessary or appropriate to maintain client self-sufficiency
  • Provide information on the benefits available through Criminal Injury Compensation.
  • Maintain client records in a complete and concise manner; maintain confidentiality
  • Compile client services reports for funding sources and the Board of Directors as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Systems Advocacy:

  • Work as a team with DCS, law enforcement, the D.A.’s office, and mental and medical health providers, to assist child abuse victims and their non-offending parents and guardians.
  • Attend CPIT meetings in the five counties we serve.
  • Track child abuse and child sexual abuse cases from the point of referral through the prosecution of the case.
  • Responsible for putting all data into the computerized system and tracking child abuse cases using the National Children’s Alliance Child Abuse Case Tracking System (NCA Track)
  • Act as a liaison between families and other community agencies
  • Compile statistical reports for funding sources as needed
  • Complete 15 hours of job-related training per year
  • Provide community education, such as Stewards of Children training

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of parent-child interaction, child development, substance abuse, and the dynamics of child abuse, child sexual abuse and neglect, domestic violence, and the ability to apply this information in working with clients
  • Working knowledge of community resources and ability to use appropriately to meet families’ needs
  • Communication and problem-solving skills to effectively work with families
  • Organizational skills to independently manage workload and related responsibilities
  • Ability to function under pressure in crisis situations
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Ability to work effectively with employees from other agencies and members of community groups
  • Ability to work in a team environment where multiple players contribute to problem solving
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form
  • Ability to operate a computer

Education and Experience

  • B.S. or B.A. in Social Work or related field required.
  • Demonstrated maturity and experience in successfully working with families.
  • Must have worked with children for at least 3 years.
  • Must pass a TBI background check and TBI finger printing.
