Job Summary

Nashville Tree Conservation Corps is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to promote, preserve, protect and plant tree canopy in Davidson County. In furtherance of its mission, NTCC embraces advocacy, working with elected officials, policymakers and stakeholders to advance meaningful policy change in Nashville, TN. Since 2019, five new tree bills have moved forward.

NTCC continues to promote the planting of trees through its annual tree sale. It also organizes volunteer tree-planting activities around Davidson County, including the installation of an impressive 1,000-tree arboretum on Shelby Avenue.

Position Description: NTCC is looking to hire a highly motivated Executive Director who is able to continue to grow the organization into one that can fulfill its vision, mission and purpose.  The Executive Director will report to a rotating Board of Directors and committees. The Executive Director will be responsible for all operational areas, including but not limited to, personnel, financial, operational and legal affairs, as well as responsible for the building of relationships in the community (public relations and community networking), managing day-to-day business operations, and developing and implementing strategies to fulfill its mission.

Job Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Develop and implement strategies that support Nashville Tree Conservation Corps’ mission to promote, preserve, protect, and plant the urban tree canopy of Nashville, TN
  • Create complete business plans that attain goals and objectives set by the Board of Directors
  • Forge and grow relationships with fundraisers, partners, government offices, and external agencies that support the organization’s mission and vision
  • Develop and pursue a long-term legislative vision for the preservation of Nashville’s tree canopy utilizing assets and resources from within and outside the non-profit
  • Develop and maintain a strong digital strategy for the organization utilizing existing digital assets and forging new digital capabilities using new and existing technology

Organizational Leadership

  • Build an agile work culture and organization capable of responding to changes happening within Metro Nashville, country, and world affairs
  • Build effective teams consisting of volunteers, paid contractors, and future staff to achieve the organization’s daily activities and long-term plans
  • Devise remedial actions for any identified issue(s) and conduct crisis management when necessary
  • Develop and support new key performance measures and reports that monitor the overall health of Nashville’s tree canopy

Financial Responsibilities 

  • Identify and apply to grant opportunities that can support programs and operations within the non-profit
  • Responsible for fundraising efforts, including both micro-funding and large funding opportunities
  • Operate in a fiscally responsible manner, track expenditures and ROIs and oversee the  work required of NTCC’s treasurer, such as budgeting, periodic reports, required state and federal filings and submissions

Program Development and Public Outreach 

  • Act as the public speaker and public relations representative of the organization in ways that strengthen the organization’s profile; be the voice for trees in Nashville
  • Direct and oversee the maintenance and development of flagship projects under the organization’s stewardship, such as Shelby Avenue Arboretum, Annual Farm-to-Yard Tree Sale, and any other projects as directed by the Board

Qualifications

  • Strong leadership skills with a philosophy and style that encourages growth, collaboration, open communication and accountability
  • Experience developing strategies and plans
  • Ability to apply successful fundraising and networking techniques
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and measures of performance
  • Proactive problem solver and self-motivated
  • Conceptual or technical expertise in various reporting tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or some other kind of software is a plus in order to build compelling narratives around urban canopy-related datasets
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and public speaking skills
  • Passion and interest in trees
  • Policy experience desired
