Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director for Children’s Faith Formation, the Elementary Coordinator is responsible for growing young disciples of Jesus Christ, grades 1 – 6, through age-appropriate ministries of faith formation for the children and their parents. Experiences will demonstrate the way of Jesus by creating relationships and resources that strengthen parents’ connection to their children as their primary spiritual nurturers. This includes the elements of learning, knowing, and putting faith into action, thereby fulfilling the mission of the church: to know Christ, to make Him known, and to exhibit His love through worship, education, and service. 

Job Responsibilities

Elementary Programming

  • Partner with the Assistant Director for Children’s Faith Formation to connect and present the gospel in an age-appropriate manner to both believers and unbelievers through the implementation of curriculum, games, music, and small groups.
  • Oversee 1st-6th grade programming by providing leadership, logistical support, and encouragement to volunteers and Children’s Ministry staff.
  • Cultivate an environment for 1st – 6th grade that creates a community with an emphasis on friendship, vulnerability, celebration, and worship.
  • Manage, edit, prepare, and distribute Elementary (1st-6th) curriculum to volunteer teaching staff.
  • Weekly teaching in an Elementary Sunday School large group space.
  • Lead regular preteen and Elementary parties to encourage connection and service.
  • Work with Youth Ministry in creating a seamless transition for 6th grade from Children’s Ministry to Youth Ministry.

Major Events And Logistics

  • Assist in the planning and execution of major events in both the Children’s Ministry and the larger church.
  • Partner with Children’s Ministry staff with all aspects of Elementary Milestone celebrations
  • Interact and communicate with event vendors as needed.
  • Support the mission and vision of First Presbyterian Church and participate in the life of the church and “all-church” events.

Parents And Volunteers

  • Support parents as the primary spiritual nurturers of their children by developing intentional relationships.
  • Participate in quarterly recruiting efforts, create a culture of surrogate families, and share the vision of the Children’s Ministry with the entire church community.
  • Develop relationships with volunteers and parents to encourage, equip, train, and support them as they create a web of connections around kids at First Presbyterian Church.
  • Engage in regular “contact ministry”—relational time with children and parents outside of church (i.e., having coffee with moms, attending soccer games, music recitals, birthday parties, etc.) and sending birthday cards, first-time visitor cards, encouraging text messages to parents, etc.

Operational

  • Meet regularly with the Assistant Director for Children’s Faith Formation and Director of Ministry with Children & Their Families to develop and implement short and long-term goals that accomplish the vision of the Children’s Ministry.
  • Partner with the Assistant Director for Children’s Faith Formation on changing demographics and methodologies needed to reach kids within the ministry.
  • Provide consistent and thorough feedback, data, and input to direct superiors on how to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Elementary programming and Children’s Ministry as a whole.
  • Consistently learn and maintain the 18 essential systems of the Children’s Ministry to ensure that all measures are taken to keep them sustainable, operational, and thriving.
  • Pursue professional and managerial development growth opportunities.

Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills

  • Demonstrates a loving and caring nature suitable for providing Christian nurture to elementary-aged children.
  • Capacity for relational ministry with both children and adults.
  • Understands developmentally appropriate methods and practices for ministry with children.
  • Able to lead a team of volunteers in a way that demonstrates both gentleness and gratitude.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and manage time, and problem-solve effectively.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively.
  • Promotes teamwork.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with data management software preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize and manage time, multi-task

Position Qualifications

Education: College degree, preferred

Experience:

  • An active, growing relationship with Jesus Christ, functional knowledge of scripture, familiarity with the Reformed tradition, and an ability to integrate the Christian faith into day-to-day work in a way that brings about a comfortable advancement of the Gospel in relationship with colleagues and others, is required.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of working experience in a children’s faith formation ministry of a church.
  • Presbyterian, with a working knowledge of the polity and program of the Presbyterian Church (USA), preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Participation in annual Continuing Education events is required.
