The English/Language Arts Teacher Role: 

Jewish Middle School of Nashville is seeking an ELA lead teacher to serve our student body, 5th-8th grades. The ELA teacher will choose and/or co-create and execute an ELA curriculum serving all of our students, collaborating with and having the support of our exceptional education lead and head of general studies. Our ELA teacher will have a major role in cross-curricular and informal educational opportunities. This individual will be the advocate for writing and reading skills in all areas of the school, working with other teachers in support of developing our students’ writing abilities

Job Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serving as an engaged, creative, energized, collaborative, and committed member of JMS staff
  • Teaching three 45-minute English Language Arts classes per day
  • Leading a 45-minute advisory session once a week and providing mentoring for students in that advisory
  • Supervising 4 hours per week of other duties (lunch, study hall, recess, etc.)
  • Representing the art of writing in our cross-curricular collaboration including our annual arts celebration
  • Contributing to the planning of all-school writing activities, including periodic days of inquiry
  • Attending regularly scheduled staff meetings and in-service as agreed upon
  • Leading Parent-Teacher conferences twice per year with advisory students
  • Attending appropriate professional development workshops 

Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Qualifications:

  • BA required, Masters degree preferred
  • 3 years of related experience preferred
  • Experience teaching children or adolescents
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently
  • Experience working with children with learning differences and behavior challenges is preferred

Additional Information

Benefits

Jewish Middle School is looking for a candidate to work at least 6 hours per school day. The timing can be adjusted based on availability. Salary range $36,000-39,000 for .75 FTE. Qualified candidates can combine this role with other openings for a full-time position.

JMS offers a comprehensive health plan and covers the portion of the premium corresponding to the portion of FTE for part-time employees who opt in. HSA, FSA, and DCFSA are also available.
