Job Summary

Morning Star Sanctuary, a biblically-based organization that exists to provide refuge for victims of domestic violence and their children consistent with AGAPE’s Mission and Statement of faith, is now hiring for the following position:

Position Title: Domestic Violence Counselor

Reports to:  Director of Counseling and Director of Domestic Violence

Purpose: To provide counseling and therapeutic services to victims of domestic violence and their families.

Job Responsibilities

Direct Services: Provides counseling and therapeutic services to victims of domestic violence.  Works directly with victims to determine areas of need, set goals, and develop a treatment plan.  Coordinates, develops, and facilitates support or educational groups to victims of domestic violence in coordination with residential program staff.  Assesses individual counseling needs of and provides counseling services to adults and children participating in AGAPE’s domestic violence emergency shelter program, addressing issues of safety, self-care, family stabilization, life transitions, obtaining medication or psychiatric assessment as needed, grieving past or current losses, and improving communication and other relationship skills.  Assists individuals with mental health problems, identifying their needs, strengths, and risk factors.  Provides referrals to other service providers as needed.  Assists in the planning and delivery of program services to adults and children participating in AGAPE’s domestic violence emergency shelter program.  Attends and actively participates in training and/or staff meetings provided monthly (required to attend six trainings/meetings per year).

Administrative: Maintains client paperwork/files.  Maintains confidentiality of client services, in compliance with HIPAA.  Provides information, linkage, and referral with service providers.  Provides administrative team support.

Reporting:  Documents client interactions, crisis interventions, incident reports, and other relevant notes into database software.

Qualifications

Must be a competent professional with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, maintain confidentiality, ability to take initiative, crisis intervention, conflict management, culturally sensitive, team focused and collaborative, and ability to clearly/objectively document information. 

Qualifications include:

  • Pre-licensed/licensed counselor with master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or related field required
  • Experience in crisis intervention and working with victims of domestic violence preferred
  • Experience in management and possesses leadership skills
  • Team player with strong decision-making skills
  • Proficient in MS Office
