WHO WE ARE

Founded 33 years ago as a dream and launched as a one-night-a-week program for 10 students, Saddle Up! is now a year-round program that will serve over 220 children and young adults this year on our 34-acre farm in Williamson County. Our mission is to impact the lives of our riders by providing opportunities to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational, and recreational experiences with horses. Saddle Up! is a highly volunteer-dependent and volunteer-focused organization, with more than 500 active volunteers in our database.

Saddle Up! is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the region, and the only one exclusively serving children and young adults with disabilities. We are a Premier Center accredited by PATH International, the organization that sets the standards for safety and quality in equine-assisted programs.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Volunteer Services Director is responsible for the recruitment, training, placement, and retention of the 300 volunteers per week needed for Saddle Up!’s work and sets the tone for a warm and welcoming environment for all volunteers who come to Saddle Up! The majority of the position’s time focuses on managing our volunteer software program, ensuring that volunteers are scheduled to support our programs. In addition, the Volunteer Services Director is responsible for recruiting opportunities, developing new approaches to volunteerism at Saddle Up! to maximize the volunteers’ experience, and ensuring the most effective and efficient use of volunteers to support the organization. The Volunteer Services Director schedules part-time Lesson Assistants and works in tandem with the Program Operations Director to provide other support as needed to achieve program goals.

Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains the volunteer schedule to ensure that programs are consistently covered with needed volunteers.
  • Recruits volunteer through public speaking, marketing, and connecting with key community contacts. 
  • Develops and executes volunteer recruitment methods to ensure the continued flow of interested potential volunteers
  • Plans and executes volunteer appreciation and recognition campaigns and events
  • Continuously evaluates and improves volunteer training working collaboratively with other staff to develop upgrades and improvements to the volunteer program.
  • Presents, or ensures the presentation of, regular New Volunteer Training sessions. Schedules other volunteer training as needed.
  • Works with staff to identify roles for volunteers and matches the volunteers’ skills and interests to the defined volunteer opportunities. 
  • Schedules, plans, and organizes volunteers for all defined volunteer opportunities, special events, one-time projects, corporate work days, etc.
  • Oversees the Volunteer Coordinator in the maintenance of the Volunteer Manual and updates as needed, volunteer metrics, including retention, volunteer database, and volunteer communication.
  • Manages recruits, hires provides general training and schedules for Lesson Assistants.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of professional volunteer management experience in a similar role with a nonprofit organization, or a combination of extensive personal experience as a volunteer with relevant professional experience. Demonstrated experience as a teacher/trainer or coach of people. Some experience around horses is preferred.  This position requires:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to positive communications, teamwork, and excellent customer service and ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
  • Ability to work independently and be a positive contributor to the staff team and overall environment              
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail; Strong time management skills
  • Flexibility to respond to daily demands of the volunteer scheduling process and to remain unflappable when handling changes
  • Ability to motivate and manage others
  • Ability to produce and present volunteer training sessions with excellent speaking skills
  • Computer proficiency using Wrangler volunteer software, Salesforce database, Form Assembly, and Microsoft Office software or the equivalent

Saddle Up! offers the following competitive benefits:

HOLIDAY TIME OFF – Holiday time off for 9 major holidays annually and time off to vote, jury duty, bereavement leave, and continuing education as required.

PTO – Employees with 0 – 36 months of service receive 17 days of PTO each year increasing to 22 days each year at 37 months of service and to 27 days annually at 60+ months of employment.

HEALTH INSURANCE – Health Insurance for employees only is 50% paid by Saddle Up! 0 – 4 years length of service; 4+ years of service employer-paid portion increases to 75%.  This benefit is paid on medical insurance only.  Dependents and spouses may be added to the insurance coverage at the full expense of the employee.

OTHER COVERAGE -Through our PEO, Oasis, employees, spouses, and dependents may obtain Dental, Vision, HSA/FSA, and life insurance during the annual benefits enrollment.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance is provided and is 100% employer-paid.

401K – After completing one year of service, all employees age 18 or over who have worked a minimum of 1000 hours in a calendar year will be eligible to participate in the company-sponsored 401(k) retirement plan. The Saddle Up! The Board of Directors decides annually to approve a discretionary match to employee retirement contributions. The plan allows eligible employees to contribute pre-tax dollars, through payroll deduction, to a retirement account that offers multiple investment options. Investments, which are directed by the employee, are professionally managed by investment experts.
