Job Summary

The Director of Training Program is responsible for the successful development, delivery, and operational implementation of the Retrieving Independence Service Dog Training Program.  This includes monitoring all training requirements (to ADI standards) across two prison facilities and supporting the delivery of volunteer training, furlough team schedules, as well as documentation to ensure all processes, procedures, and policies are being followed.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Hands-on teaching with prison teams at both prison facilities to ensure training of recipient-specific needs and progression toward proficiency before placement.
  2. Works closely with the VP of Recipient Experience and VP of Programs & Evaluation to ensure a successful match and placement of approved service dogs.
  3. Attend and assist where needed at Recipient Training Camp – including checking in each day with recipients for skill understanding and proficiency.
  4. Work with the Director of Program Engagement to monitor the furlough schedule of each dog to maximize time outside of the prison.
  5. Oversee, monitor, and respond to Microsoft Teams Furlough Reports and scheduling options in My Impact sign-ups (this includes sending furlough lists and reports to prisons each week, and loading forms into Better Impact)
  6. Work closely with the Director of Program Engagement to ensure a successful volunteer strategy is in place to complement the training work within the prison program.
  7. Adhere to all ADI guidelines.

Other responsibilities:

  1. Work with the Director of Program Engagement to provide post-placement support to existing service dog clients
  2. Support Tier Leaders and other relevant staff in new volunteer orientation
  3. Continued education and curriculum development within the organization to maintain high-quality training efforts.


Qualifications include:

Education: College degree (BS/BA), or equivalent experience.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years related experience, with a demonstrated background in education, facilitation of instruction and working with underserved communities. Dog training experience is welcome, but not required as it will be provided.

Other: Proficient with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Additional Information


This is a full-time position, that requires some work on-location at Retrieving Independence’s two training program locations at Tennessee Department of Correction Facilities. Outside of on-location work, hours and location are flexible.
Salary from $50,000 annually, DOE, with a 75% employer contribution healthcare stipend and generous PTO.
This position reports to the CEO/President.
