Siloam’s approach to medical care provides a unique, interdisciplinary model of whole-person health care that addresses the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual determinants of health. Our staff is anchored by a multicultural primary care team that serves alongside roughly 300 volunteer interpreters, doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical specialists each year to provide comprehensive health care to Nashville’s most vulnerable.

Job Responsibilities

The primary objective of the Director of Nursing is to manage the nursing staff in their day-to-day patient care as well as set broader organizational goals for the department. This includes oversight of clinic processes such as intake, triage, patient education, patient flow, onsite diagnostics, care teams, care coordination, and coordinating clinical programs to remain in compliance with federal regulations. This position involves supervision and organization of two Assistant Nurse Manager, staff nurses, volunteer nurses, medical assistants, and others involved in caring for patients.

Daily Operations

  • Supervises nursing staff (paid and volunteer)
  • Supervises use of equipment, supplies and medications, ensuring staff has thorough training and understanding
  • Oversees the organization of the triage process for walk-in patients and of the system for handling the phone line for nurse calls
  • Performs routine specialized procedures and onsite diagnostics such as venipuncture, catheterization, POC INR, and sterile dressing changes under established protocols; teaches others in these same procedures
  • Performs or assists in procedural care requiring complex nursing skills and clinical judgment
  • Notifies primary physician, as appropriate, regarding unusual or unexpected events/problems requiring direct physician consultation
  • Oversees the medical supply inventory and purchasing process
  • Educates and advises the nurses regarding specific medical issues within established protocols
  • Reviews the patient schedule to ensure appropriate nurse support and supplies
  • Oversees the immunization program including vaccine storage and monitoring, emergency vaccine storage, and completes application for VFC as needed at new clinic sites

Staff Management

  • Works with Human Resources to coordinate all aspects of hiring, counseling, performance evaluations, and progressive discipline procedures for nursing staff
  • Provides cross training, when appropriate, for nursing staff
  • Oversees orientation of new staff and volunteers according to departmental guidelines, and regularly evaluates staff nursing competency
  • Ensures that all nursing staff and volunteers understand clinic policy and department procedures
  • Schedules nursing staff for efficient clinic operation and makes daily assignments
  • Works with EMR super users to train nursing staff to effectively use the EMR and adjust basic nursing processes in Athena
  • Organizes and assigns Siloam staff/volunteers to various roles using monthly, weekly, and daily calendars
  • Organizes continuing education for nurses
  • Oversees care teams and care coordination
  • Researches and implements staff retention strategies

Other Duties

  • Works with the Chief Medical Officer and Interim COO to maintain an effective Quality Assurance program
  • Practices safe work habits, particularly regarding processes regulated by OSHA and standard clinical practices
  • Writes, implements, and annually reviews clinical policies and procedures
  • Completes annual OSHA Safer Sharps Evaluation
  • Works with CMO to manage clinic and nursing budget and create nursing goals for grant applications
  • Evaluates nursing processes to help meet medical visit goals (including delegation of tasks to nurses, appropriate nurse/MA/provider ratios, etc.)
  • Assists other staff members in keeping facilities clean
  • Practices in a professional and ethical manner and maintains appropriate current knowledge of health care advances and marketplace changes
  • Coordinates a system of patient advocacy that is reflective of Siloam’s mission, which is to share the love of Christ by serving those in need through health care [examples of patient advocacy include referrals to specialists, accessing insurance benefits, requesting free medications, and securing patient health education pamphlets in various languages]
  • Participates in on-going quality improvement (QI) activities within the roles defined above

Qualifications

We value having an experienced team to provide whole-person care for our patients. We are looking for someone who:

Education and Experience

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (RN)
  • Current State of Tennessee RN Nurse License required
  • Current CPR Certification
  • Minimum of 3 years working in a healthcare setting, preferably office-based with increasing responsibilities
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred

Qualifications

  • Passionate about Christian ministry to the underserved and in full agreement with Siloam’s mission and core values
  • Willingness to serve persons with limited access to healthcare and who are from different cultures and faith beliefs
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with MS Office products as well as electronic medical records preferred
  • Adherence to OSHA and confidentiality requirements
  • Ability to work well in a team setting
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred
  • Bilingual ability a plus
  • Must have excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge of patient evaluation and triage procedures
  • Knowledge of drugs and their indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, and proper administration
  • Ability to perform moderate physical activity
  • Ability to observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress
  • Knowledge of primary care principles and practices
  • Able to handle sensitive information in a professional and confidential manner

Special Conditions of Employment

  • May be required to submit to annual TB screenings
  • Required to provide proof of Hepatitis B vaccination (although it may be declined through a declination form or may provide record of vaccination from previous employer)
  • Annual CPR Training for current certification
