Job Summary

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Director of Equestrian Operations is responsible for the overall operation of the Joe C. Davis Equestrian Programs and the administration of the Equestrian Programs and supporting services at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan. The Director of Equestrian Operations will ensure the camp’s lesson program is run efficiently through detailed supervision and objective decision making and serves as support to the summer camp operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Plan, evaluate, and implement YMCA of the USA and YMCA of Middle Tennessee guidelines as aspects of the Equestrian program
  • Develop, implement, and monitor department budget to ensure fiscal responsibility throughout the year
  • Generate revenue and maintain expenses in order to stay within budgetary restraints
  • Hire, train, onboard and record/approve payroll for seasonal, full-time, part-time staff
  • Provide ongoing development for all part-time and full-time equestrian staff, including weekend staff, camp counselors, barn staff, lesson instructors
  • Serve as an effective member of the Camp Widji Senior Staff team through relationship-building and communication
  • Supervise, direct and coordinate lesson programs and trail rides
  • Supervise and train equestrian lesson staff in equestrian procedures and camp experience
  • Maintain accurate records for the department, facility, and staff
  • Develop effective relationships with groups in attendance and help to solicit new guests on a year round basis
  • Provide general care to ensure the health of horses
  • Maintain vet and farrier records as well as lesson records, waivers, and all other documentation
  • Ensure the barn is clean and safe for both guests and horses
  • Manage and participate in the cleanliness, efficiency, and safety of the barn and overall care of the horses, farm and petting zoo animals, including daily cleaning, grooming, feeding and watering, as well as medical care and training
  • Communicate and ensure strong relations with our vendors, boarders, and guests
  • Develop and carry out marketing for all camp programs by communicating with the community and distributing information
  • Develop positive relationships with program participants and provide motivational support and guidance
  • Examine injured persons and administer first aid or CPR, utilizing training, medical supplies and equipment; contact emergency medical services in case of serious injury
  • Complete incident and accident reports, as required
  • Inspect all equipment used for safety hazards, damage or wear, and repair or replace, as needed
  • Prepares the Equestrian Department for 100% compliance with ACA and CHA; relate to branch board by attending all meetings and works on assigned committees
  • Communicate to direct supervisor any concerns or incidents that may need follow-up
  • Communicates any suggestions to improve the programs within the equestrian area
  • Takes an active role in the annual campaign, including but not limited to special events, soliciting donations, telephone surveys, and other Camp Widji activities
  • Maintains professional growth through training experiences, literature, and workshops

Qualifications

Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA

Superior supervisory skills and an enthusiastic personality with the ability to inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, guests, and participants to create a culture of service

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in barn maintenance and horse care

Certifications Required:

  • Before start of 1st shift: New Hire Orientation training
  • Before start of 1st shift: Basic Life Support, First Aid
  • CHA, riding certification or other documented training preferred
