Job Summary

Consistent with the Christian mission and vision of the YMCA of Middle TN, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Vice President of Marketing, the Director of Content Marketing will be responsible for the day-to-day planning and execution of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s content marketing and marketing communications initiatives. The Director of Content Marketing plays a leading role in helping the YMCA of Middle Tennessee plan and produce marketing communications, stories, videos and other compelling content that engages the organization’s key audience groups and furthers the Y’s non-profit mission.

Job Responsibilities

  • Model the YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
  • Organizing and leading the marketing communications and content planning and production processes, ensuring that the organization is maintaining up-to-date editorial calendars and effectively meeting project and production deadlines
  • Supporting the VP of Marketing in the planning and development of YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s overall content marketing and audience engagement strategies.
  • Ensuring the collection and tracking of all content-related dashboards/key performance indicators
  • Directly supervising and overseeing the work product of the organization’s copywriting, email marketing, content marketing, and multimedia content production functions as assigned by the VP of Marketing
  • Leading development, adoption and enforcement of editorial standards of quality for key audience communications
  • Overseeing and managing all content-related freelancers and other third-party vendors
  • Serving as consultant and strategist for internal and external video/multimedia projects
  • Helping to conduct and lead research and understanding of the needs and interests of the Y’s core internal and external audience groups
  • Acting as key marketing liaison for key audience groups and strategic initiatives (internal and external) as assigned by the VP of Marketing
  • Writing and producing compelling stories, blog articles, social media posts, videos/multimedia and other content as required to drive engagement across the Y’s communication channels with key audience segments
  • Supporting planning, development and delivery of content and communications across the organization’s e-mail marketing platform and channels, including member e-newsletters, social media and multimedia channels
  • Supporting organization’s other marketing and communications efforts as assigned

Qualifications

  • Passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to the mission and cause of the YMCA
  • Demonstrated experience planning, developing and executing effective marketing communications and content marketing strategies for a company or organization—experience with B2C marketing initiatives and/or nonprofit experience preferred
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with a deep understanding of what makes a great story (writing samples required as part of hiring process)
  • Strong coaching and managerial skills, including demonstrated experience effectively supervising a team of marketing communications professionals and/or content producers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work cross-functionally with other departments/business units to achieve shared goals
  • Must present a professional image and possess conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate sound judgment and initiative
  • Must be highly organized with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Four-year college degree in English, Journalism, Technical Writing or a related field preferred
  • Minimum five years experience as a journalist or writer for a professional publication, news station and/or web site with professional editorial processes and workflows
  • Demonstrated track record of writing and/or producing compelling and engaging content for specific audience groups/demographic segments
  • Experience writing/producing to a brand’s voice, style and messaging standards
  • Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office, blogging platforms, web content management systems and popular social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.)
  • Experience and proficiency with video production, shooting and editing techniques

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior e-mail marketing experience
  • Proficiency with HTML, CSS and other digital design tools
  • A “publisher’s mindset” with an audience-first approach to creating content
  • An exceptional strategic and creative thinker who can write stories that hit the “sweet spot” of both engaging selected audiences and fulfilling an organization’s strategic objectives
  • Superior writer who has a deep understanding of what makes a great story (professional writing samples will be required of serious candidates)
  • A proactive self-starter with a passion for finding new stories and new ways to deliver them
  • Strong attention to detail, especially when under tight deadline pressures
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and work under tight deadline pressures
  • Superior interviewing, reporting and research skills
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Basic Adobe Photoshop skills
  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within a cross-departmental team
  • Experience using data/web analytics (including user feedback) to optimize content marketing efforts
  • A love of learning and desire to stay current on industry trends and developments in marketing, communications and content strategy
