Job Summary

The Development and Communication Specialist will report to the Director of Development of Nashville Humane Association. In this role the specialist will work at the direction of shelter leadership, specifically Director of Development, to perform content marketing (website updates, newsletter content), social media (content, collection, edit, publish), promotional work, assist with fundraising and development efforts, even planning, and community/business outreach job functions on behalf of NHA.

Job Responsibilities

JOB TASKS:

CONTENT – (50% JOB/TASKS TIME)

  • Work with the DD, PR/Social Media Director, other appropriate staff, to gather and create content for marketing, social media, press/media relations and other promotional needs for NHA.
  • Work with department leaders to discover and collect content and story ideas for NHA promotion. Collect photo, video content, create social content, write copy, basic promotion design (using digital solutions Canva), to support adoption programs, animal welfare, spay and neuter programs and other NHA shelter initiatives.
  • Participate in major NHA events, gather content, discover, and create content and story ideas during events, preceding events for promotion, and post-event recaps.
  • Participate in Humane Education events, Community Outreach events, Fundraising events, discover and create content and story ideas, including live story telling on social media, and additional pre and post event content needs.
  • Assist in the management of the NHA website to update front end content using CMS maintenance tools, and ensure website content is relevant and up to date.
  • Assist in the writing of NHA promotional materials, newsletters, online content, and other content creation needs.
  • Advance the messaging and communication/marketing goals of NHA in a consistent, appropriately articulated and intended manner, including strategic output specific to individual social media platforms.
  • Create, develop and design other NHA materials, collaterals, social, digital and content for NHA promotion and marketing as necessary.
  • Regular content updates to NHA website, create/develop content for NHA newsletters, promotional materials, etc.
  • Setting key performance indicators (KPIs) for social media campaigns and measuring a campaigns performance against the KPIs.
  • Maintaining brand standards for NHA.

DEVELOPMENT OUTREACH – (50% JOB TASKS/TIME)

  • Work with DD to connect NHA to local businesses for the promotion and marketing goals of NHA.
  • Work with DD to create outreach collateral materials, content, copy and social media tools to assist in connecting local businesses.
  • Work with DD to perform development and fundraising tasks including researching available grants, basic grant writing, foundation and fundraising research.
  • Development and fundraising tasks to include outreach to area businesses, foundations and organizations regarding development and fundraising tasks for NHA.
  • Development and fundraising tasks to include utilization of fundraising platforms, Kindly and NHA website.
  • Work with DD and Events Coordinator to create an invoice system for all sponsors.
  • Directly contact identified targets, local and national businesses, leaders, stakeholders and other relevant parties for partnership, promotion and marketing goals of NHA.
  • Supervise and work with NHA volunteers on Development Team projects.

 

Responsible for submitting and operating withing departmental budget. Responsible for supporting shelter staff, when necessary, at the direction of the Director of Development and Executive Director. Additionally, this position serves as a back up for the Development Assistant, processing daily deposits in their absence; and back up for the Business Manager, processing daily mail in their absence. This position may be responsible for other duties as assigned though not specifically numerated above and for all duties delegated by the Development Director and Executive Director. This position must posses a high degree of discretion, integrity, professionalism and accountability, consistent, punctual and regular attendance, professional image and demeanor both in person and online. Able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed; able to travel as needed. Minimum physical requirements: Able to successfully travel and maneuver within the day-to-day workspace, able to lift and transport up to 25 lbs. All positions require working with, and in direct contact to shelter animals.

Qualifications

Qualifications:   Bachelor’s Degree and/or 2+ years of professional experience with concentration in Marketing, Business, Non-Profit, or Communications preferred. Prior experience in development can be substituted for a degree. Prior experience as an administrative assistant considered as well. Should possess self-starting attitude, strong communication skills, front-facing customer service skills, time management skills, ability to work with others both individually and in groups, ability to problem solve and critical thinking skills. Computer experience, data entry, database management, MS Office Suite, email, and calendar. WordPress Experience required. Experience with Google Analytics, Google AdWords and Search Engine Optimization is a plus. Knowledge of digital marketing best practice, current trends, and innovations in fundraising. Able to work flexible hours including some nights, weekends, holidays and/or special events. Able to learn new skills, processes, or technology, accept change and take initiative in the workplace. Experience handling animals in a professional environment a plus.
