Job Summary

Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the company. The role oversees the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the company’s reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures that guide daily accounting functions and activities.
  • Provides oversight of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Establishes, modifies, and monitors the financial internal control environment of the organization to ensure transactions are recorded accurately, timely, and completely, with proper segregation of duties, and assets of the organization are properly safeguarded.
  • Oversees all financial compliance filings of the organization required by local, state, and federal governments, with the exceptions of those performed by the Human Resource function and the Form 990 and related schedules, which are prepared in conjunction with the CFO and the outside accounting firm.
  • Manages the monthly closing process to ensure timely results are communicated with the organization’s management team. 
  • Provides direct oversight to Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Fixed Asset, and Cash processing for the organization.
  • Prepares grant budgets and substantiated grant reimbursements for private and government grants, as well as Federal Programs including CSFP, SNAP Outreach, TEFAP, SFSP, and others. 
  • Serves as a resource to provide financial analyses and other financial support to the organization.
  • Serves as primary liaison with external audit and tax teams to provide supporting schedules, worksheets, records, and other necessary information for efficient financial statement and single audits, and for the Form 990 filing.
  • Serves as primary contact with cash management and credit card services with our bank relationships including providing monthly reporting to support compliance with debt covenants. 
  • Manages organization software platforms providing invoice approval workflow, automated accounts payable, and expense management and reimbursement.
  • Provides direct support to the CFO and management team in the annual budget process.
  • Ensures all major accounts in financial systems are properly monitored and reconciled. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related areas required. Master’s degree preferred. CPA  preferred.

Experience: 5 years of progressive experience in accounting positions with 2+ years of direct managerial experience in accounting units required; previous Controller level and non-profit experience preferred.

Skills & Capabilities:

  • Strong knowledge of A/R and A/P processes with significant experience.
  • Organize, coordinate, and direct projects.
  • Strong oral and written communication abilities.
  • Advanced Excel skills.

Other requirements: Our pre-hire process requires acceptable results from the following: professional reference feedback, criminal background, and Motor Vehicle Record. A current Driver’s License and automobile insurance are also required. Criminal backgrounds are evaluated on a case-by-case basis considering several factors (timing, frequency, severity, and job relation).
