Job Summary

United Way of Greater Nashville (United Way) seeks a visionary nonprofit business leader skilled in driving organizational success and empowering high-performing staff. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the CEO will be based at the organization’s offices in Nashville, Tennessee, and have overall management responsibility for a growing impactful organization with a $60 million annual budget, and 85+ employees.

Combining inspirational leadership and sophisticated management abilities, they will advance the organization in terms of culture, capability, processes, and impact. While working closely with the organization’s senior team, the CEO will inspire innovation and ensure that the organization is continually well-equipped to advance its mission.      

Job Responsibilities

Primary Roles & Responsibilities

  • Partner with the senior leadership team, and Board of Trustees to develop and lead a comprehensive, multi-year strategic plan
  • Oversee UWGN’s development, community engagement, and marketing teams, while ensuring collaboration and alignment of strategies across these departments
  • In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, foster the creation and execution of a comprehensive, multi-year strategy for fundraising and continue to expand and diversify UWGN’s revenue streams by implementing innovative strategies
  • Manage, along with the Chief Marketing Officer, marketing and communications strategies to heighten the organization’s profile and align community engagement and volunteer programs with the organization’s long-term growth goals
  • Maintain regular and ongoing communication with the Board of Trustees, providing leadership and support to all members.  Thoughtfully build consensus, attend all meetings, provide accurate, timely reporting, and ensure risks are proactively communicated in addition to successes. Leverage the board to support the Chief Development Officer to initiate and cultivate relationships.
  • Evaluate UWGN’s current revenue portfolio, performance, and ROI by analyzing and interpreting data and metrics in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer. Assume, alongside the Chief Financial Officer, responsibility for the fiscal integrity of the organization.
  • Lead a strong, highly motivated team; build and continually foster an inclusive environment where team members can thrive and grow professionally
  • Work collaboratively with the Community Impact Officer to create strategies with the community that address the underlying conditions that hold problems in place and foster systemic change.
  • Grow volunteer engagement by partnering with the Chief Volunteerism Officer to expand the hands-on footprint
  • Ensure all strategies and campaigns have a diversity and inclusion lens
  • Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social, and community trends and ensure that UWGN is informed of changes in trends that might impact the organization’s approach to revenue development and growth

Qualifications

Functional Leadership

10+ years of experience leading fundraising, marketing, communications, and/or community engagement teams, ideally in the nonprofit sector. Experience setting, leading, and executing an organizational growth strategy. Approaches revenue development with a strategic, data-driven lens.

Stakeholder Engagement & Management: Experience leading and motivating large teams and working within a complex, matrixed organization. Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders, including staff, leadership, volunteers and donors, corporate and philanthropic partners, and more. Proven experience working with a diverse, nonprofit board is a plus. 

Mission Orientation: Passionate about and committed to taking bold action to improve lives so everyone can thrive. Experience and a history of providing visionary leadership in mission-driven advocacy organizations preferred.
