Job Summary

The Board Treasurer serves as the financial officer of the organization and if an active finance committee exists, serves as its chairperson. They apply their knowledge of accounting to monitor finances, while directing the preparation of financial reports and summarizing the reports for the Board on a monthly basis.

Job Responsibilities

The Board Treasurer works with other Board officers and the Executive Director to develop financial plans and prepare the organization’s annual budget, audit and/or tax forms, and presents financial reports to the Board on a monthly basis. As an Officer of the Board, the Treasurer also serves on the Executive Committee. Additionally, the Board Treasurer will consult with the Bookkeeper on all finance and reporting matters, including but not limited to:

  • Employer’s Quarterly Tax Return (IRS Form 941)
  • Annual Wage and Tax Statements (IRS Form W-2)
  • Annual Misc. Income Statements (IRS Form 1099)
  • Annual Tax Return (IRS Form 990)
  • Any other local, state or federal forms required as it relates to finances

Qualifications

Possession of the following skill sets are helpful for those serving in the role of Board Treasurer:

  1. Critical Thinking – ability to appraise organization’s financial standing, policies and procedures in order to make recommendations regarding the financial decisions to be made
  2. Aptitude for Organization – excellent organizational abilities; work with accuracy and keep impeccable records
  3. Strategic Planning – ability to synthesize cause and effect scenarios (with regard to potential financial decisions the organization will make) is necessary for a Treasurer to accelerate their organization’s growth and future success
  4. Creativity – when it comes to generating funds and cutting expenses, new ideas and creativity are key in an ever-changing and developing organization
  5. Clear Communication – ability to communicate complex financial concepts in easy-to-understand, jargon-free, laymen’s terms; serve as ambassador to the public on financial matters of the organization
  6. Basic Accounting Skills – prefer individuals with accounting skills on the level of a CFO or controller, but basic accounting skills with an aptitude to learn more is acceptable
  7. Knowledge of Non-Profit Organizations, Bylaws – firm understanding of the organizations, bylaws to ensure finances are maintained to the standard of the organization’s rules and those of local, state, and federal governments
