Job Summary

A board treasurer is a leadership position on a board that involves financial oversight, record-keeping, and reporting. Treasurers are responsible for safeguarding an organization’s finances and are often involved in governance as members of the board of directors.

Job Responsibilities

A board treasurer is responsible for an organization’s financial management, including:

  • Budgeting: Preparing an annual budget that outlines expenses, estimates income, and allocates for unexpected expenses
  • Financial reporting: Reviewing and preparing financial reports, and presenting them to the board regularly
  • Financial strategy: Advising the board on financial strategy and fundraising
  • Policies and procedures: Creating and implementing policies and procedures for managing the organization’s finances
  • Taxes: Primarily responsible for taxes
  • Other duties: Overseeing the reserve funding plan, investing funds, collecting assessments, ensuring assets are secure, and ensuring proper internal controls are in place.

Qualifications

A board Treasurer should have a background in finance, accounting, auditing, or other related fields, as well as knowledge of how those concepts apply to nonprofits. Dec 5, 2023
