Job Summary

A board treasurer is a leadership position on a board that involves financial oversight, record-keeping, and reporting. Treasurers are responsible for safeguarding an organization’s finances and are often involved in governance as members of the board of directors.

Job Responsibilities

A board treasurer is responsible for an organization’s financial management, including:

  • Budgeting: Preparing an annual budget that outlines expenses, estimates income, and allocates for unexpected expenses
  • Financial reporting: Reviewing and preparing financial reports, and presenting them to the board regularly
  • Financial strategy: Advising the board on financial strategy and fundraising
  • Policies and procedures: Creating and implementing policies and procedures for managing the organization’s finances
  • Taxes: Primarily responsible for taxes
  • Other duties: Overseeing the reserve funding plan, investing funds, collecting assessments, ensuring assets are secure, and ensuring proper internal controls are in place.


A board Treasurer should have a background in finance, accounting, auditing, or other related fields, as well as knowledge of how those concepts apply to nonprofits. Dec 5, 2023

Additional Information


In addition to budgeting, treasurers work with the board of directors to provide advice regarding potential opportunities, risks, and tax implications of future financial plans. They might also be consulted regarding grants, proposals, investments, and plans regarding unexpected funds and/or cash flow shortages.
