Job Summary

The Center for Living and Learning is seeking a part-time Assistant Horticulturist for the vocational training program. This program provides onsite job training and supported employment services for residents of CLL and individuals from the community with a documented mental illness and/or disability from ages 16+. CLL residents participate in the management of a large garden that provides Community Supported Agriculture. The purpose of this program is to provide onsite work training with the goal of transitioning to employment in the community. A qualified candidate will have the opportunity to manage garden work groups, develop and facilitate educational lessons, and maintain the upkeep of the garden with the direction of the Horticulture Manager. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise, instruct, and keep trainees on task while they are working.
  • Communicate any needed garden supplies or equipment with the Horticulture Manager in a timely manner. 
  • Communicate garden tasks with trainees 
  • Maintain garden grounds and equipment as needed 
  • Maintain organization in the greenhouse and sheds 
  • Monitor and maintain the cleanliness of the CSA workroom 
  • Prepare educational lessons and/or garden-related activities for days when trainees cannot be outside 
  • Address and resolve trainee needs in a respectful and compassionate manner
  • Effectively communicate with trainees experiencing active symptoms of mental illness and assist with de-escalation. 
  • Record daily progress notes including completion of garden tasks 
  • Check, compose, and respond to emails as appropriate 
  • Manage accessing and uploading documents on Google Drive 
  • Follow safety policies and procedures 
  • Attend applicable staff training (biannual meetings, CPR/First Aid training, etc)

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an associate degree/high school diploma and one-year relevant experience. Paid experience working directly with those with a disability will be considered first. All candidates are subject to a background check and must have reliable transportation as well as a valid driver’s license. Recommended qualifications include: 

  • Strong work ethic 
  • Relational support skills: the ability to respectfully guide, confront, advise, delegate, and direct trainees in a respectful manner 
  • Ability to independently oversee projects 
  • Follow the garden structure already established 
  • Ability to multi-task and keep daily records 
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills 
  • Ability to quickly and calmly adapt to change
