Job Summary

The Artistic Director is responsible for leading and shaping the artistic vision of the organization. This includes overseeing the artistic programming, collaborating with educators and performers, and ensuring the overall quality and relevance of jazz performances. The Artistic Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with other staff members to achieve the organization’s mission.

Job Responsibilities

Artistic Vision and Programming:

  • Develop and articulate a clear artistic vision for the organization.
  • Curate and plan a diverse range of jazz education programs and performances.
  • Collaborate with instructors, musicians, and other artists to create engaging and high-quality experiences.

Education and Outreach:

  • Oversee the development and implementation of a broad spectrum of jazz education programs for students of all ages and skill levels.
  • Curate education offerings that complement the variety of jazz genres seen in performances.
  • Explore innovative ways to showcase jazz talent and engage the community through education offerings.
  • Work within NJW monthly budget for education expenses and revenue.
  • Negotiate fees, hire, and send contract information to artists/teachers. The office manager can assist with the administrative responsibilities.
  • Collect biographies, photos, and press materials from all artists/teachers. The Office Manager can assist with these administrative responsibilities.
  • Submit all press materials to the marketing team in a timely fashion.
  • Foster relationships with schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to expand the reach of jazz education.

Performance Management:

  • Curate and organize jazz performances, concerts, and events.
  • Work with musicians and performers to ensure the highest level of artistic excellence.
  • Explore innovative ways to showcase jazz talent and engage the community through performances.
  • Work within NJW monthly budget for performance expenses and revenue.
  • Negotiate fees, hire, and send contract information to artists. The Office Manager can assist with these administrative responsibilities.
  • Collect biographies, photos, press materials, and videos, on all artists. The Office Manager can assist with these administrative responsibilities.
  • Submit all press materials to the marketing team in a timely fashion.
  • Make recommendations for additional marketing ideas.
  • Submit invoice for artist pay and collect check before the performance date.
  • Be present night of the performance, to greet artists, watch the show, and provide feedback.

Collaboration and Team Leadership:

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and other staff members to align artistic goals with the overall mission of the organization.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of educators, performers, and support staff.

Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum Bachelors Degree in a related field, Preferred Masters Degree in a related field.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role within the jazz or performing arts community.
  • In-depth knowledge of jazz music, its history, and its various styles.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups of artists and stakeholders.
  • Passion for jazz education and a commitment to community engagement.
