Job Description 

The AmeriCorps Employment Specialist will support the employment team in their efforts to provide opportunities for economic mobility through career advancement and educational attainment. 

AmeriCorps 

The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission. 

AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O’Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

Hours: 9 am – 5 pm 

Job Responsibilities

  • Support community members and clients in their search for employment opportunities 
  • Facilitate workshops and programs related to employment, including but not limited to interview skills training, soft skills training, financial literacy, and resume building and creation 
  • Develop media related to financial literacy, utilizing the Money Mindset curriculum 
  • Document client interactions and outreach efforts in Microsoft Suite and Salesforce database 
  • Assist employment services staff in outreach to potential employers in Middle Tennessee 
  • Collaborate with both Adult Education and Employment teams to promote educational advancement and economic mobility 
  • Provide one-on-one support for digital literacy, including internet navigation, email creation and communication, and general computer skills 
  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops

Qualifications

Required 

  • Over 18 years of age 
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. (you can see the requirements here
  • Pass a background check to work with vulnerable populations 

Preferred: 

  • Computer literacy in Microsoft and Google Suites 
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds 
  • Experience providing support to families or individuals living in poverty 
  • Comfortable speaking in front of groups of people 
  • Experience in community outreach and partner relationships 

Physical Demands & Accessibility 

  • Knowledge in interpreting audio/visual information, for example: communicating via telephone, utilizing Microsoft Suite, etc. 
  • Ability to read and interpret written and digital materials (ADA applicable)
