Job Description 

MOBC’s Adult Education program prepares adult students for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) through classroom teaching, one-on-one tutoring, and online self-study support. The Adult Education Empowerment Specialist supports adult students in achieving education and employment goals.

The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission. 

AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O’Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

Hours: 9 am – 5 pm most days, with occasional days 11 am – 7 pm ​​​​​​

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Adult Education Instructors with curriculum implementation, focusing on literacy, numeracy, adult basic education, and HiSET preparation (Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing) 
  • Communicate with students working remotely online on their HiSET preparation with the goal of motivating, re-engaging, and offering academic support through video-conferencing tools including but not limited to Zoom or Google Meets 
  • Monitor and report learning progress to Adult Education Instructors 
  • Opportunity to modify and implement digital literacy curriculum and classes 
  • Provide one-on-one support for digital literacy, including resume building, email creation, and job applications 
  • Assist in promoting and recruiting Adult Education and Digital Literacy services, programs, and events through posting on social media 
  • Schedule and manage appointments with adult education students 
  • Collaborate with both Adult Education and Employment teams to promote workforce readiness 
  • Assist with tutoring MOBC’s adult education students via Homework Hotline, an after-hours free tutoring service 
  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops 

Qualifications

Required 

  • Over 18 years of age 
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. (you can see the requirements here
  • Pass a background check to work with vulnerable populations 

Preferred: 

  • College degree or currently enrolled in a degree program; degree in Education is a plus 
  • Excellent customer service skills 
  • Experience communicating via digital platforms 

Physical Demands & Accessibility 

  • Knowledge in interpreting audio/visual information, for example: communicating via telephone, utilizing Microsoft Suite, etc. 
  • Ability to read and interpret written and digital materials (ADA applicable)
