Job Summary

The Advocate takes on the role of the main point of contact for individuals affected by domestic violence and those dealing with landlord-tenant issues. They collaborate closely with attorneys based in the Cookeville office; create and maintain positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and state that would benefit the client population; prepare and present community education workshops and conduct outreach events about Legal Aid Society’s mission and services. This position is funded in part by and in collaboration with the Family Centered Legal Solutions Grant. Personnel must adhere to the goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Interview applicants and, in consultation with the supervising attorney, determine the level of service to be provided.
  • Assess the needs of clients, providing relevant information and making appropriate referrals to other community resources and for additional Legal Aid Society (LASMTC) advice or representation.
  • Act as a legal case manager for victims of domestic violence who are navigating the court systems.
  • Develop great working relationships and referral sources with shelters, family justice centers, housing authorities, and other community partners, for the benefit of the client.
  • Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines.
  • Support the casework of attorneys as assigned. Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LASMTC staff.
  • Regularly attend court proceedings.
  • Travel within the LASMTC service area is necessary.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of two years of relevant experience. Social work experience is a plus.

Previous employment or volunteer work with a law office, court, social service agency, or other related setting. Experience working with low-income people and victims of domestic violence.

Smart and coachable with a high degree of initiative and emotional intelligence.

Appreciates the experiences and needs of people from diverse economic, social, and cultural backgrounds. Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software.

Effective oral and written communication skills, including in-person client interviews and while helping people in crisis.

Ability to get along well with people and work as a team. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish/Arabic is a plus.
