Formerly the family home of Mabel and Leslie Cheek, Cheekwood now serves the public as a botanical garden, arboretum, and museum with period rooms and art galleries. Cheekwood’s mission is to stimulate the mind and nurture the spirit, of not only our visitors but our staff as well.

We are currently seeking an Adult Education Manager to join our team. This position manages the Cheekwood Gardening School and other adult education programs including scheduling, preparation, supply purchases, instructor recruitment, and day-of setup. This manager role will also assist with other educational programs when necessary.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of The Cheekwood Gardening School, including but not limited to scheduling classes and instructors, benchmarking like organizations, recruiting and assessing instructors, working with marketing to share information about the school, keeping the website up to date, and planning long-term for growth.
  • Schedule adult workshops during Orchids in the Mansion, Cheekwood in Bloom, Special Exhibitions, Harvest, and Holiday Lights
  • Create and maintain relationships with area instructors and teaching artists.
  • Manage adult workshop supplies and budget.
  • Oversee class, and workshop registration, and manage waitlists.
  • Assist in preparation for workshops and classes to include setup and material prep.
  • Propose and implement new programming to elevate Adult Education at Cheekwood
  • Be knowledgeable about the types of programming offered by institutions.
  • Maintain all adult education-related information on the website to ensure information published is always up to date.
  • Oversee Adult Programs Assistant (part-time).

Departmental Support:

  • Assist with Education and Public Programs events.
  • Create and implement family-friendly, hands-on, educational, and culturally relevant community activities for various cultural celebrations.
  • Knowledgeable of all departmental programs, events, and activities

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Preferred: Education, Science, Humanities, or related degree

Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Knowledge of the Cheekwood Education Department’s mission and the mission of the institution. Organization and communication skills, excellent written communication, and public speaking skills. Strong interest in interpersonal communication and relationship building. Must have the ability to be flexible. A responsible attitude and professionalism toward a career are essential. Must be a team player.

Experience

  • Experience in working in a museum, botanical garden, or comparable institution is strongly preferred. Experience teaching is preferred.

Equipment to be utilized

  • Telephone, computer, scanner, copier, projector. Constituent relationship manager software and scheduling tools.
