Job Summary

Legal Aid Society has an immediate opening for a Paralegal Position in its Nashville office. This position will focus on cases involving criminal reentry (obtaining housing, expungements, certificates of employability, and reinstatement of driving licenses and voting rights) across the Middle Tennessee service area. The paralegal will conduct intake for new cases and provide case handling and case management assistance to lawyers in the Nashville office. This position will also conduct outreach activities for low-income people, organizations, and agencies about Legal Aid Society, rental housing, and criminal reentry topics. The paralegal will maintain and manage a caseload, supervised by an attorney, and monitor and comply with grant requirements and reporting.
This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.

Job Responsibilities

Conduct intake for new cases and provide case handling and case management assistance to lawyers in the Nashville office. Conduct outreach activities for low-income people, organizations, and agencies about Legal Aid Society, rental housing, and criminal reentry topics. The paralegal will maintain and manage a caseload, supervised by an attorney, and monitor and comply with grant requirements and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum High School diploma or GED. Associates degree or a paralegal certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years prior experience working in a law office, the court, social service agency, or other relevant settings.
  • Practical oral and written communication skills, including practicing interviewing clients and helping people in crisis.
  • Strong typing and computer skills.
  • Must be sensitive to and committed to providing high quality legal and advocacy services to domestic violence victims and low-income people.
  • Must be detail-oriented and have great organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and Legal Files database preferred.
  • Bilingual is a plus.
