As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Who We Are: For 50 years Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee has served young people in the eight counties of Middle Tennessee, including Davidson County. Our agency is consistently recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as one of the top-performing agencies in the federation.

Position: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, and serving as an integral member of the executive leadership team, the Vice President (VP) of Stakeholder Engagement will lead a team of four to develop a world-class development and communications strategy for BBBSMT to include an annual giving campaign, marketing, branding, media, and public relations, campaign promotion, market research, issues management, and crisis communication. The VP of Stakeholder Engagement will be responsible for BBBSMT’s development department as well as varied and integrated communications products and services including: newsletters and other print publications; web, e-news, social media channels and other online communications; media and public relations; and marketing. Primary objectives include:

  • Drive the overall brand awareness of the organization and its mission;
  • Increase visibility of and investment in the organization’s work among various stakeholders;
  • Build a culture where the marketing, development and programming functions collaborate and drive decisions informed by reliable data.

Job Responsibilities

Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic marketing and communications plan to advance BBBSMT’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs, impact, and priorities across key stakeholder audiences;
  • Create a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow BBBSMT’s leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media and key influencers;
  • Partner with the executive team to develop and implement an internal communications strategy across multiple channels;
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with the executive team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them;
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of the annual giving and recruitment programs. Review results and make needed program improvements or eliminate underperforming activities;
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors Marketing and Communications Committee and prepare monthly statistical and descriptive reports on the Department’s goals and performance.

Stakeholder Engagement, Operations

  • Oversee development of all BBBSMT’s marketing and communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications; manage relationships with associated vendors;
  • Responsible for the effective operations of the annual giving, recruitment, marketing and communications function, including budgeting and planning;
  • Lead and oversee the organization’s website development (design and content), online and social media initiatives; monitor analytics;
  • Oversee all aspects of public relations, including media relations and community relations;
  • Plan and execute media campaigns and advertising buys. Ensure consistency of key messages and brand identity.  Track return on investment of media buys;
  • Manage BBBSMT’s brand across all internal departments to ensure continuity;
  • Oversee donor stewardship and data management to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

Team Development, Management

  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach consistently;
  • Facilitate effective cross-functional teamwork with members of BBBSMT’s development, operations, and programs functions;
  • Source and manage the use of external resources (e.g., public relations firms, advertising and marketing agencies, photographers, printers, digital media experts, graphic designers, among others).

Qualifications

  • Passion for BBBSMT’s mission to defend the potential of our community’s youth
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a management role
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
  • Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media
  • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic development, communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization’s mission and goals
  • Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized
  • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
  • Experience in building, mentoring, and coaching a team
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Superior communication and management skills; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers
  • Stature, gravitas, and confidence to gain the credibility and respect of high-performing Board of Directors
  • Self-reliant and results-oriented
  • Ability to make decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
  • Passion for BBBSMT’s mission to defend the potential of our community’s youth
