Position Description

The Senior Accountant, under general supervision, conducts a wide variety of intricate and complex accounting duties and projects. within the guidelines of the organization. An ideal candidate for the Senior Accountant role should be savvy in QuickBooks and proficient in Excel, have excellent organizational, analytical, interpersonal skills, and the ability to flourish in a team-oriented environment. The Senior Accountant should also possess the ability to review and analyze current processes for potential improvements and meet timeliness in completing assignments with deadlines and due dates and have strong integrity and ethics. Position requires financial analysis of assigned grants and contracts and ensuring that assigned accounts are managed in accordance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements for the not-for-profit industry, agency accounting procedures and internal control.

The successful leader for this position is responsible for accounts receivable, bank and credit card reconciliation, general ledger management, fixed asset management, cash flow statements, balance sheet preparation and maintenance. Must be a self-motivated, reliable individual interested in joining our growing organization.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Document not-for-profit unique financial reporting requirements and maintain work papers consistent with new accounting standards.
  • Assists in preparation and analysis of 990 filings and related tax payments.
  • Assist the CFO with the day-to-day, monthly, and year-end operations of the fiscal department including budget review and analysis.
  • Assists with all monthly journal entries including investment, prepaid, accruals, fixed assets depreciation, A/R and some costs allocation. Maintains related Excel spreadsheets.
  • Record the processing of cash receipts, record revenue and receivables and work closely with the program teams to ensure that revenues and receivables are reconciled at any given time.
  • Monitors open A/R balances and ensures accounts are within company’s benchmarked balances
  • Review the processing and recording of accounts payable transactions and ensure that all invoices and staff reimbursements are paid accurately.
  • Submit payroll data, record payroll entries and review payroll account reconciliations. Initiate and record payroll cash transfers.
  • Assists with preparation of reimbursement requests, correspondence and expenditure reports for grants and contracts.
  • Perform the processing of functional expense allocations, monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, fixed assets depreciation and recording of adjusting and reclassification journal entries, if necessary.
  • Assists in financial year end closing, annual audit, and grants and contracts audit
  • Prepare final financial statement packets. Also prepare monthly reports to management.
  • Investigate budget variances by contacting Executive Directors to identify issues and, if necessary, aid in understanding the variances to assure the financial reports are stated appropriately.
  • Perform general accounts analysis and reconciliations, including bank statements, credit card statements, fixed assets, accruals, prepaid expenses, and intercompany reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review preliminary financial statements by independently analyzing accounts, confirming account balances, identifying account discrepancies and making corrections in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining internal financial controls and procedures.
  • Responsible for special projects as assigned by the CFO.
  • Correspond professionally with all levels within and outside the organization.

Qualifications

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • CPA or CPA candidate is preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a non-for-profit financial reporting role.
  • Demonstrate strong not-for-profit and other U.S. GAAP accounting knowledge and experience to apply in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Must be able to prepare or review journal entries and complex underlying supporting schedules and documents with ability to explain such analysis to non-financial staff.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles related to classifying, recording, and summarizing data and making computations to compile financial records.
  • Solid understanding and demonstrated proficiency of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Ability to provide exceptional client service with a high professional demeanor and ability to handle matters confidentially.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to effectively communicate with all levels including clients, team members and team leadership.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills. Strong attention to detail and focus on accuracy.
  • Ability to handle stress and work well under pressure and with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks, MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
