Job Summary

The WCP Puppet Truck travels throughout Davidson County with the aim of reaching people who can’t visit the Main library Children’s Theater. Puppet Truck programs inspire a love of books through engaging, three dimensional performances of classic children’s literature. The 45-minute interactive presentations incorporate stories, songs, music, puppets from the library’s extensive and growing collection. The Puppet Truck works in conjunction with two amazing library programs. Bringing Books to Life and the Adult Literacy Mobile Lab. Bringing Books to Life provides literacy outreach and educational programs to preschools and daycares. Adult Literacy supports organizations serving adult learners by offering information, access to education technologies and tools, and professional development.

Job Responsibilities

The WCP Puppet Truck / Mobile Lab Assistant is a temporary, part-time position paid for by the Nashville Public Library Foundation. Reporting to the Puppet Truck Supervisor, this position is responsible for providing programming out in the community on the Puppet Truck. This position also reports to the Adult Literacy Coordinator and is responsible for delivering laptop computers throughout the city for pop up computer classes.

Types of Duties

  • Engaging children with interactive productions
  • Performing shows with various types of puppets including marionettes, rod puppets, shadow and hand puppets
  • Representing the library out in the community
  • Loading and operating the Puppet Truck
  • Lifting/Pushing/Pulling up to 75 pounds
  • Working 3-20 hours per week – Hours vary depending on scheduled performances
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 3 years’ experience in theater or related field
  • 1 year experience working with or providing programs to children
  • Must have a valid TN Driver’s License

Preferred Knowledge/Skills

  • Experience working with puppets
  • Experience in program development
  • Able to operate a 15 ft. box truck
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Understanding of library service and mission
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with library staff
