Position Description 

If you are excited about the power of volunteerism and can think creatively, nimbly, and collaboratively about how to inspire and engage diverse, Latinx and spanish speaking volunteers in service, you will love this service role! The AmeriCorps Member will be culturally sensitive, highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work well independently as well as part of a team. The ideal candidate will also need to be fluent in Spanish, as they will commonly engage with Nashville’s immigrant and refugee communities.

The Neighborhood Engagement Leader recruits and engages volunteers in neighborhoods that are underrepresented among Hands On Nashville volunteers. The Leader assists the Communications and Community Engagement team by planning and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion strategies to deepen the culture of service in Nashville. They will develop more inclusive volunteer outreach and retention and will build relationships with Nashville’s vibrant and communities.

The Leader will complete their service term with increased skills in cultural competency, communications, program development, volunteer leadership, public speaking, research, project management, and more!

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities 

  • Attend neighborhood meetings and events where Spanish is the primary language to learn about local challenges and grassroots solutions and recruit Spanish-speaking volunteers
  • Research, identify and mitigate barriers to Latinx volunteer participation for Nashville’s diverse neighbors
  • Determine who are trusted partners in Nashville’s Latinx community and how to engage with them to build capacity for service by communicating with Nashville’s Spanish-speaking population
  • Learn how HON can increase its own credibility in Nashville’s Latinx neighborhoods through intentional relationship building with Spanish-speaking community members, engagement, and follow through
  • Develop resources and processes to cultivate volunteer inclusion, such as Spanish communication materials
  • Engage existing and prospective Latinx volunteers utilizing the Spanish language through social media and other communication platforms

Typical Day In This Position 

This AmeriCorps member will serve with the Communications and Community Engagement team to research and identify ways to mitigate barriers to volunteerism. The leader will participate in team meetings, lend their insights to the team on Nashville’s diverse volunteer perspectives, and work to build relationships with community members in specific Nashville neighborhoods.

Service Schedule 

Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m with flexible schedule for evening neighborhood meetings and potential weekend events, with advance notice.

Qualifications

Competencies  

Members should have experience with or the willingness to develop competencies in these areas:

(1) Serving with and learning about diverse populations with humility.
(2) Community organizing strategies
(3) Leading volunteers and managing large projects
(4) Responding to disasters

Key abilities include:

(1) Communicating effectively with staff and community members
(2) Willingness to meet new people and get others excited about volunteering.
(3) Proficiency in Spanish

Other Skills 

Bilingual skills are necessary.

Reliable access to transportation required (Members will be reimbursed for service-related mileage.)
