Job Summary

The Managing Attorney will provide day-to-day management for approximately 40 staff in the Nashville office, including 6 direct reports. In addition, this position will lead diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at the firm. This position will also provide legal representation to eligible clients and carry a caseload in the area of employment law. As part of a holistic approach, the representation may include varying areas of law as needed, administrative advocacy, and community education for clients in accordance with program guidelines, priorities, and the Code of Professional Responsibility. This person will also be a representative in the local service area, establish relationships with community leaders, and assist with identifying opportunities for targeted outreach, increased effectiveness and systemic impact, and pursuit of new funding sources. This position is funded in part by and in collaboration with, one or more grants. Personnel must adhere to the goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities.

 

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide high-quality legal representation to individuals in accordance with the Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Provide legal assistance to clients dealing with unemployment compensation, wage claims, discrimination claims, and enforcement of other employment rights, as well as access to job training programs.
  • Act as the firm liaison for issues related to equal employment opportunities and affirmative action.
  • Review and supervise the work of support staff members done on behalf of the attorney’s clients and clients assigned to support staff.
  • Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and guidelines.
  • Participate in the firm’s community education program by being available to speak with community groups and agency staff, suggesting ideas for, and helping to prepare and update, community education materials.
  • Undertake self-education and provide training to enhance the firm’s diversity hiring and retention efforts, while also leading the firm’s Racial Justice and Equity Team.
  • Comply with relevant portions of the Legal Services Corporation’s Performance Criteria and with the American Bar Association’s Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) and at least 4 years of legal practice.
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Admitted to practice in Tennessee, eligible for admission through reciprocity, or willing to take the first available bar examination.
  • Excellent research, writing, and advocacy skills, including the ability to articulate effectively and logically both orally and in writing.
  • Basic proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel software.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including in client interviews and helping people in crisis.
  • Prioritize work, plan, and problem-solve, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus.
  • Passion for racial justice and equity as demonstrated by past experience and/or education.
