Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) is an anti-poverty non-profit organization with longstanding history and deep community roots, grounded in tradition and strengthened by innovation.  Founded in 1894 when Miss O’Bryan organized the Gleaners Society at First Presbyterian Church to support impoverished North Nashville residents, Martha O’Bryan Center has operated from the heart of Cayce Place – Nashville’s most distressed community – since 1948.  This is where we continue in service, partnering with Cayce Place families to open doors of hope and possibility, create a culture of attainment, and positively shape future generations.  Martha O’Bryan Center serves 12,000 people annually with its programs in early learning, parent empowerment, youth development, adult education, food security, crisis counseling and public charter schools East End Prep and Explore! POSITION SUMMARY

The Maintenance Worker performs a variety of routine and preventative maintenance and repair work on buildings, mechanical equipment and utility systems. This position also performs a variety of cleaning/custodial work as needed.

Job Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Troubleshoots minor maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing, and equipment repair or replacement.
  • Performs preventive building maintenance duties, caulks windows and doors, repairs and replaces broken windows.
  • Performs routine plumbing repairs such as unstopping toilets, sinks or urinals, fixing water leaks, leaking faucets, and water fountains.
  • Performs routine electrical repairs such as changing light bulbs or fluorescent lamps and assists in repairing ballast and light fixtures.
  • Maintains grounds in clean, safe, and orderly manner including mowing, trimming, weeding, minor pest management, cleaning debris from grounds, pathways and parking lots; maintains grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Assembles and moves furniture, hangs pictures and bulletin boards, moves and sets up tables and chairs.
  • Repairs and replaces door knobs or locks, repairs door closures, patches holes in walls.
  • Paints interior and exterior walls.
  • Empties and re-bags waste containers, mops spills, washes windows, cleans and restocks bathrooms, cleans dryer filter, removes fingerprints from doors.
  • Cleans Center vehicles inside and out, checks fluid levels and adds correct amounts if necessary, checks tire pressure and adds air, replaces battery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

One or more years related experience.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of trades related to building maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of a variety of building maintenance procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for the maintenance and repair of public buildings.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in reading and following blueprints and assembly instructions.
  • Skills in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong time management skills; uses time effectively; consistently meets deadlines.
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality regarding sensitive information.
  • Exercises good and consistently fair judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the staff and public in giving and obtaining information.

The employee frequently is required to walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Valid Tennessee driver’s license.
