Job Summary

The Tennessee Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization which provides education, public policy advocacy, and direct services to survivors of rape and abuse. The Legal Counsel is a member of the Coalition’s Management Team and is responsible for providing legal advice and representation to the Coalition, leading the Legal Team, and supervising staff attorneys.

Job Responsibilities

Contracts and Policies

  • Reviewing agency contracts.
  • Developing MOU’s with subcontractors.
  • Updating agency policies and legal publications.

Training and Technical Assistance

  • Developing and updating legal materials on domestic and sexual violence.
  • Providing technical assistance to communities on laws and policies related to domestic and sexual violence as needed.
  • Providing training for Coalition staff on policies as needed.

Management

  • Supervising staff attorneys.
  • Ensuring legal staff are meeting grant goals and objectives.
  • Overseeing data collection and grant reporting for legal grants.
  • Facilitating legal team meetings.

Meeting Attendance

  • Attending weekly management meetings and monthly staff meetings.
  • Attending all board meetings, DVSCC meetings, and community meetings as needed.

Other Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

  • Law degree and license to practice law in Tennessee.
  • A minimum of five years of experience practicing law.
  • Experience working in family or immigration law.
  • Knowledge of domestic abuse and sexual assault laws.
  • Experience supervising other attorneys.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience in collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment.
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Word and LEXIS.

Supervision

  • Supervised and accountable to the Executive Director.

Hours of Work

  • The Legal Counsel is a part-time, remote, salaried, exempt position. It is expected that the workload will be completed within a minimum of 20 hours per week. Some weekend and evening work will be required. Occasional overnight travel may also be required.
