Job Summary

Saddle Up!’s mission is to provide children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities with horses. Saddle Up! is the oldest and largest program of its kind in the region, and the only one exclusively serving children and youth who have disabilities. We are a Premier Center accredited by PATH International, the organization that sets the standards for safety and quality in equine-assisted programs. The Farm Assistant is responsible for assisting with barn cleanliness and maintenance, equine feeding and health, and grounds and facility maintenance and upkeep as assigned. The Farm Assistant may be required to provide assistance with lessons when needed. This position provides important support for stable-hand volunteers.  This position offers the opportunity for flexible hours and rewarding work on our beautiful 34-acre farm in Williamson County.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee volunteers or perform duties associated with the feeding equines
  • Perform barn cleaning and daily maintenance jobs, including, but not limited to, mucking stalls,
    sweeping barn isles/crossties, emptying the manure spreader, cleaning tack/equipment/grooming
    boxes, cleaning automatic waterers, applying sunscreen, blanketing horses, cold hosing, and picking out paddocks.
  • Identify symptoms of equine illness and/or injuries and bring them to the attention of the Equine Team member
    on-site or on-call.
  • Administer daily and emergency medications for equines as directed by Equine Feeder Sheets
  • Check medications boxes while on site to ensure that medications have been given and/or are
    prepared for the next shifts; alert on-call Equine Team members of any inconsistencies
  • Assist as needed with providing preventive health care to equines, such as de-worming, bathing,
    application of topical medications
  • Support volunteers as they perform barn chores, facility tasks, and equine care. Field volunteer
    questions regarding equine health, care, and/or behavior.
  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of stalls, aisles, and crossties in the main barn and Red Barn.
  • As directed, update organization systems in the barns, including but not limited to, pasture
    assignment board, horse pictures, halter wall, winter blankets, rain sheets, etc.
  • Assist Property Director with farm and facility needs.
  • Assist in lessons as needed.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in horse handling and feeding, basic horse health, barn, and farm
    maintenance activities.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience operating small farm equipment such as RTV, manure spreader, golf
    cart, etc. Experience with large tractor and tractor attachments is a plus.
  • Completion of Saddle Up! volunteer training and leader training. CPR training is a plus.
  • Experience with the daily use of Microsoft applications and Salesforce.
  • Must be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable
    accommodation.

    • Ability to lift 50/80 pounds regularly.
    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, hear, speak, twist, bend, and lift.
    • Ability to move safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces.
    • Ability to see and respond to emergencies.
    • Ability to work in extreme weather.
