Job Summary

The Marketing & Communications Director (MCD) directs and develops communications messages and materials that effectively market and promote the multiple and varied programs of the Tennessee Language Center (TLC) to the university; federal, state and local government; commerce and industry; nonprofit organizations; and individuals. This position serves in a leadership role representing TLC among the agencies of IPS and the broader marketplace and constituencies of the Tennessee Language Center. The MCD leads all communications efforts for TLC including writing, editing and proofreading marketing communications materials, and ensure staff adherence to branding and style of IPS and TLC. The MCD serves as the creator and editor for print brochures, online newsletters and blogs, using graphic design applications. He/She/They manages the electronic content for the TLC website and social media profiles for TLC. The MCD understands and manages SEO, digital advertising, and web analytics. The MCD builds and manages relationships within the programs of TLC as well as external vendors and stakeholders. The MCD coordinates promotional efforts of TLC programs, is responsible for selection and acquisition of promotional items and fully participates in outreach events.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Marketing & Communications Director recommends and guides the strategy for all communications of the programs of TLC (ESL and World Language Classes, Interpretation and Translation Services, Cultural Awareness, and Professional Development), website, and public relations messages and collateral to consistently articulate TLC’s mission. The MCD ensures that TLC is viewed as the primary source of language education and language and cultural services and within its diverse network and constituent base. The MCD is responsible for the overall management of TLC’s brand and coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with TLC program staff to direct program-level marketing efforts. The MCD is a subject matter expert at communications in all its nuanced forms, from written press releases to speeches delivered at public events and oversees both external and internal messaging, managing the messaging of other staff who represent TLC in the public forum. Periodic and seasonal travel throughout the state is required to promote TLC as Director.

Job Responsibilities

Marketing, Messaging and Promotion (40%)
• Actively promote TLC programs and create public relations, educational or fundraising events, press releases, marketing initiatives, and campaigns through collaboration with community partners and relevant outlets
• Develop and maintain effective relationships, strategies, and campaigns for promoting TLC’s extensive program offerings to diverse customer bases (B2C, B2B, various industries, etc.)
• Coordinate TLC participation in community events, festivals, meetings, and conferences
• Attend networking events to promote TLC services in the state of Tennessee
• Work with TLC program divisions to monitor and advise on use of program-specific TLC social-media accounts
• Collaborate closely with and advise Executive Director
• Create messages for employees and stakeholders from the Executive Director
• Serve as TLC contact for public records requests

Marketing Collateral Development and Creation (30%)
• Design and create press kits, press releases, and collateral materials
• Create, edit, design and deliver monthly TLC Newsletter and compile, draft and edit reports for boards, legislators and constituents
• Schedule and secure advertisements; create messaging for TLC on radio and other media
• Provide direct support to departments across TLC, including graphic design, talking points, power point presentations, photography and videography, with assistance of technology team

Technology (15%)
• Database management; Customer relations and contacts management (CRM); Track and report contacts through IPS Performance Point
• Maintain and develop website in collaboration with tech team
• Monitor web presence and SEO status in collaboration with tech team
• Maintain primary TLC internet/social media applications including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn

Administrative (15%)
• Oversee marketing budgets for multiple programs and communicate parameters to the team
• Document and preserve in digital and hard copy relevant historical records of organization
• Will oversee and coordinate efforts of other administrative and programmatic staff in creation of deliverable and projects, including marketing assistants, interns and volunteers
• Direct and monitor marketing efforts of TLC program directors and staff

Qualifications

Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, communications, or related field

Experience:
8+ years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, public relations, business, non-profit management, graphic design, or related field

Skills:
Required:

• Exceptional writing skills coupled with creative design
• Strong organizational and administrative skills
• Microsoft Word, Excel, Zoom, CRM databases, and desktop publishing expertise
• Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and online tools such as Canva
• AdWords, SEO, knowledge of HTML5 & CSS3, WordPress, digital/ social marketing

Preferred:

• Working in a multicultural, multilingual environment
• Knowledge of a second language
• Experience working in multicultural environments
• Experience in event planning
• Experience in graphic design
• Experience developing and implementing communications strategies

Behaviors:
