Job Description 

Serve as the go-to thought leader in the organization for health policy and equity issues. Lead and supervise health equity and children’s health teams that are dedicated to protecting and improving the health safety net in Tennessee for children and families by providing policy and advocacy support. Job duties include: 

  • Supervising Health Advocacy Team staff. 
  • Creating persuasive, well-supported written materials and verbal presentations to audiences across diverse fields, including health, education, government, social services, and business. 
  • Speaking to the press about the federal, state, and local health policy issues and advocacy opportunities concerning Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program  (CHIP), the Affordable Care Act, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). 
  • Identifying potential funding sources and writing grants to financially support TJC  operations, health policy, and equity work. 
  • Overseeing grants that advance specific health policy or equity strategic goals. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Analyzing current health policy as it relates to low-income and marginalized populations looking for opportunities to increase health coverage for all Tennesseans. 
  • Serving as an expert on health policy and equity issues internally and externally. 
  • Managing and keeping Heath Team staff accountable and organized on health policy projects and priorities. This includes staff focused on children and maternal health,  Independence (supports for older adults and individuals with disabilities), immigrant and refugee health, enrollment efforts in the health programs we work with, and our Black  Health Matters campaign.  
  • Collaborating with staff to refine strategic objectives and messaging on policy priorities and campaign goals – particularly on TJC’s Black Health Matters initiative.
  • Creating and supporting staff efforts in developing advocacy tools and materials to educate partners about TJC health coverage initiatives and our theory of change. 
  • Coordinating and leading Health Team meetings regularly. 
  • Attending legislative calls and meetings to understand changes to health policy changes and the impact on our constituents. 
  • Presenting and speaking at trainings and events as needed. 
  • Speaking to the media/reporters on health policy and equity issues. 
  • Sourcing and writing grant applications and reports. 
  • Overseeing and ensuring deliverables are met for assigned grants including but not limited to grants funded by Robert Wood Johnson, Community Catalyst, Kellogg, and the  National Health Law Program. 

Key Projects 

  • Overseeing and implementing Health Team project initiatives including projects outlined by TJC’s Health Equity groups and Black Health Matters staff.  
  • Creating and adapting training curriculum on health equity and advocacy to present to a variety of audiences including but not limited to community organizations, high school and college students, and healthcare providers. 
  • Collaborating with teams to look at programs and content through an equity lens Drafting a variety of written materials including whitepapers, impact statements, and op-ed articles on health policies 
  • Seeking speaking engagements to change the narrative on systemic racism and its  impact on health equity

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Public Health 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare advocacy or public health benefits 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and/or health equity advocacy policy and health  equity issues
