Job Summary

The ideal candidate is a clear communicator, strategic thinker, and thoughtful coach, with a deep commitment to social, racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice. Fully understanding the importance of creating pathways out of poverty and having the know-how to activate communications strategies for bigger wins that raise expectations and transform the city’s opportunity structures so all Nashvillians can thrive is a must. A minimum of 3-5 years experience in earned media, social media, and digital organizing is required. We are looking for a skillful writer who can break down complex policy issues in compelling ways, work collaboratively with others, motivate our constituencies to take action, and meet the moment when breaking stories and crises emerge that are relevant to SUN’s work.

This Communications Director is a full time, exempt position, and reports to the Executive Director. The Communications Director will supervise an intern, vendors, and other communications staff as we grow. This position is located in Nashville, with the flexibility to work remotely when not needed in the office.

Job Responsibilities

Organizational Communications Strategy 

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive communications strategy that elevates the profile of SUN and its accomplishments to key audiences.
  • Develop and execute effective messaging and framing strategies that will advance campaign and program goals and help achieve bigger wins against sophisticated opponents.
  • Create a communications strategy for each campaign and program, in collaboration with SUN staff and coalition groups.
  • Evaluate and improve the effectiveness of our digital and earned media strategy with the production of regular reports on the level of engagement with each medium.

Implementation and Collaboration 

  • Develop and design materials, printed and digital, which elevate SUN’s voice and credibility for our work and fundraising efforts.
  • Create and maintain a communications calendar to ensure the high-quality execution of strategies.
  • Develop strategic campaign or organizationally driven strategies for managing our website and social media presence.
  • Supervision of communications staff and vendors.
  • Build the capacity of SUN staff, member organizations, and constituents to serve as spokespeople.
  • Manage all media contacts.

Organizational Commitments

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, internal training, and other mandatory team sessions.
  • Maintain personal organization systems, adhering to organizational policies.
  • Complete reimbursements, credit card, and lobbying reports.
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director and Deputy Director.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to social, racial, economic, gender, and environmental justice.
  • 3-5 years of experience using communications as a tool to build leverage and power needed to win campaigns with advocacy organizations, political campaigns, elected officials, and/or community-labor organizing coalitions.
  • Experience in a supervisory role.
  • Understand the political landscape of Nashville and Tennessee.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends regularly as needed.
  • Strong work ethic, project management skills, and personal commitment to excellence.
