Job Summary

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) oversees Mending Hearts Development and External Relations Teams and is responsible for overseeing four main pillars including Fundraising/Development, Public Relations/Communications, Marketing, and  Volunteer Coordination. The CDO oversees the planning, organization and implementation of all activities associated with the organization’s comprehensive donor development strategy and organizational Development Plan. This position directs and oversees all fundraising, grant-management, public relations, marketing and volunteer efforts and activities to meet budgeted financial goals and share Mending Hearts’ mission with the Middle Tennessee community.

The CDO works with Mending Hearts leadership to interface with the organization’s board and program partners. Mending Hearts’ Chief Development Officer works under the supervision of the organization’s Chief Executive Officer.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage Development and External Relations Team at Mending Hearts
  • Serve as the point person for all revenue generation for Mending Hearts
  • Manage and oversee complete fundraising and donor relations cycle to include identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
    • Identify, cultivate and maintain relationships in the community to support significant sources of funding for programs through individual and corporate donations
    • Manage a portfolio of major donors and guide them through the strategic donor relations cycle
  • Develop and manage Annual Giving Program
    • Create and execute strategies to generate, increase and sustain recurring monthly partners
  • Develop and manage Planned Giving Program
    • Cultivate and manage relationships with planned giving prospects (memorial giving and estate planning gifts)
  • Develop and direct capital campaigns and other major fundraising drives
  • Manage corporate relationships to secure sponsorships, partnerships and support
  • Oversee organization grant strategy including research, proposal writing and reporting requirements
  • Oversee the execution of fundraising events to assure they achieve respective fundraising and engagement goals
  • Establish and implement Mending Hearts’ comprehensive PR / Marketing Plan including all forms of electronic communication, earned, owned and paid media
  • Oversee the execution of internal communications with Mending Hearts employees
  • Manage the donor management system, Bloomerang, including all updates and regular maintenance
    • Create and implement procedures for donor acknowledgments.
    • Ensure data integrity with frequent data scrubs, de-duplication efforts, etc.
    • Create and pull reports as needed
    • Analyze donor data to measure ROI on campaigns, trends in donor acquisition and retention and other data analysis as needed
    • Oversee the organization’s volunteer programming for on-site and virtual needs

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in fundraising, development, communications, public relations, marketing or a related field.  Will consider other degrees if you have a proven track record of successful development experience
  • Minimum of three years’ management-level experience in fundraising and marketing for a non-profit organization required
  • Minimum of five years of related fundraising experience required
  • Must have a proven record of multi-million annual revenue generation for previous organizations
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing comprehensive development programs. Direct knowledge of standard fundraising techniques and development office functions, including the complete development/donor relations process, is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and demonstrated ability to be an effective spokesperson and advocate for Mending Heart’s mission
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects efficiently
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and Donor Management Systems (experience with Bloomerang is a plus!)
  • Strong attention to detail with a positive, problem-solving approach to work
  • Proven ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Skills in building positive relationships with donors, prospects, volunteers and community partners
  • Demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours as required
  • Ability to handle highly confidential information with skill and discretion
