The Martha O’Bryan Center (MOBC) empowers children, youth, and adults in poverty, to transform their lives through work, education, employment, and fellowship. The Center cannot service the community alone, so we partner with organizations like AmeriCorps, to fulfill our mission.

AmeriCorps members serve 1700 hours over the course of 11 months with Martha O’Bryan Center, gaining hands-on experience working with families, youth, and community members. The crucial components of the MOBC—AmeriCorps years of service program allow you to build your community and professional skills, thereby propelling you towards the next steps in your career and life.

Job Description 

The MOBC youth development program for elementary and middle school students is designed to support the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally. In addition to this support, students develop their interests and passion through the arts, recre

Job Responsibilities

Hours: 9 am – 6 pm or 10 am – 7 pm (depending on site) 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Assist the K-8 Leadership Team in curriculum creation, organization, and implementation
  • Coordinate with the Site Coordinator on student recruitment and engagement strategies
  • Build relationships with a small cohort of students
  • Provide hands-on academic assistance to students daily
  • Provide complementary homework help and foundational support daily
  • Help each student achieve success by encouraging students to reach individual goals
  • Provide enrichment activities for students based on member’s individual gifts and talents
  • Plan and execute quarterly parent meetings
  • Sustain effective partnerships with community organizations
  • Assist Site Coordinators in preparation for the upcoming week’s programming
  • Create enrichment lesson plans for activities
  • Utilize programming information to check attendance and communicate with parents
  • Inventory and organize program materials
  • Assist with childcare during parent events
  • Employ databases to assist programming and grant reporting (NAZA, LEAPS, 21st CCLC, ELAP, SalesForce)
  • Collect and utilize data to inform programming
  • Participate in AmeriCorps professional development and community-building workshops. 



  • Over 18 years of age 
  • High School diploma or GED 
  • Legally eligible to work in the U.S. (you can see the requirements here
  • Pass background checks to work with vulnerable populations and children 


  • College degree or currently enrolled in a degree program; degree in Education is a plus
  • Experience with the youth population, teaching, or tutoring children
  • Leadership experience is a plus
  • Demonstrated success with participant recruitment and small event planning

Physical Demands & Accessibility 

  • Must pass a State of Tennessee childcare physical, including:
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs
  • Agility to move quickly to keep pace with young children
  • Stamina to remain alert and energetic for 8+ hours


Additional Information


AmeriCorps members will receive:

  • $19,100 living allowance (paid out twice monthly over the course of 11 months)
  • $6,895 in education award upon successful completion of hours
  • $500/month in housing allowance
  • Potential for housing placement, subject to availability
  • $160/month in health care reimbursements
  • $25/month in cell phone reimbursement
  • Unlimited access to MOBC’s food pantry
  • Monthly professional development and/or networking opportunities
  • Upon successfully completing your AmeriCorps contract, you can apply for a position at MOBC. Since 2011, 27 AmeriCorps members have become full-time staff with this organization
