Job Summary
Meals 4 Health and Healing, the signature program of The Heimerdinger Foundation, is seeking a Gardener for its organic Giving Garden. We provide organic, nutrient-dense meals, free of charge, to people who are in cancer treatment and to their caregivers. Our on-site Giving Garden (approximately 35′ x 20′) serves as a teaching garden for our volunteer teens and adults and supplies our program with herbs and vegetables for use in our weekly meals. We are seeking to fill the role of the Gardener, who will manage the yearly plan for the garden, coordinates the work needed for the garden’s full operation as a producing teaching garden and manages all needs for its maintenance.
Job Responsibilities
- Determining and executing an annual garden plan
- Planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting
- Composting
- Determining needs for the garden and requesting appropriate purchases
- Providing maintenance for all garden tools and supplies
- Educating teens in the Teen Program about the garden and organic gardening
- Working with the Chef and Kitchen Manager to coordinate planting for items needed for meal preparation and to harvest foods for meals
- Leading volunteers in tasks or projects to assist in the garden
Qualifications
- Knowledge of organic gardening
- Ability to educate about our Giving Garden
- Enjoy working with volunteer teens and imparting garden knowledge
- Communication skills for working with teen and adult volunteers
- Ability to work in a team with a common purpose towards a nonprofit mission
