Job Summary

TIRRC is seeking an English Innovations Teacher who will be responsible for facilitating classes that increase the acquisition of digital literacy and English communication skills. The position requires a commitment of 4 hours per week, not including additional prep time and data entry.  Classes will begin on September 13th, and will be held Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6-8 pm in person at TIRRC headquarters through November 3rd.

English Innovations® is a blended social learning model that combines English language learning in a collaborative, supportive classroom environment with online tools that enable self-paced, independent learning. Adult students will use a combination of interactive classroom instruction and online learning activities.  English Innovations is a model grounded in communities, engaging immigrants and immigrant-serving organizations in advocacy for effective English learning and immigrant integration. A collaborative classroom environment facilitates cognitive, social and emotional engagement. The EI Teacher will play an important role in the learning process by building relationships with students in the classroom, and will encourage civic engagement and community-building.  The EI Teacher will help design and facilitate classroom activities that explore social justice themes, as well as help manage data entry. 

Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate classes for adults with low-High Beginning English proficiency for 8 weeks in the Nashville area. The focus of the English component will be on the use and practice of English through technology-based activities, small group discussions, and independent learning.
  • With the support of volunteer tutors, help facilitate small group activities with the students.
  • Interact in a friendly and patient manner with students from different cultural backgrounds, students with various levels of language proficiency, and students who may have disabilities.
  • Update day by day lessons following a curriculum framework outlining knowledge, skills and learning strategies to be taught each week; adapt suggested learning tasks to the students in the class; adhere to a model of task-based instruction, engaged learning, and reflective practice and follow a suggested lesson flow that sequences activities. 
  • Communicate effectively with students by articulating clearly, using appropriate vocabulary, and assessing comprehension by varying methods.
  • Listen actively and effectively in order to identify student difficulties and solve problems, facilitate learning for students, build student confidence and maintain motivation and persistence. Refer students to the TIRRC resource line if applicable (615-414-1030).
  • Maintain and report on student attendance, records, and progress.

Qualifications

  • Belief in TIRRC’s mission;
  • Experience working with immigrant communities;
  • Expertise in adult education and/or ESL;
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Benefits

Contract Pay: Stipend totaling $1750 to be paid bi-weekly.
