Job Summary

The Family Empowerment Program supports families in stabilizing their housing or obtaining housing if they are literally homeless. Once supporting the family from crisis to stability we continue working with them to ensure ongoing stability. We provide ongoing case management support and linkage to wrap-around support in the areas of mental health counseling, employment navigation, education support, and childcare navigation. The program serves families in Davidson County that lacks stable housing and has at least one child (age 0–18). The case manager’s work is family centered, focused on stabilizing housing first, then supporting clients in achieving their goals to support long-term stability and bring them to a place of thriving. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop relationships within partner organizations to develop a database of landlords and employers who would be interested in housing and/or hiring families we serve.
  • Develop a presentation for local housing developers, landlords, and employers about the plight of families experiencing homelessness.
  • Create and evaluate a streamlined referral system for incoming referrals to the Family Empowerment Program.
  • Design presentations including short pitches and 1-hour sessions that can be used to market the Family Empowerment Program and be catered to a variety of interested community groups.
  • Work with city-wide efforts around prevention and diversion to involve key partners to develop training around diversion and mediation for service providers.
  • Create and update training materials for Family Empowerment Program volunteers and staff to reflect the latest research.
  • Search for additional grant funding opportunities and organize two supply drives for the most needed items for families experiencing homelessness

Qualifications

  • VISTA service is a full-time, one-year commitment.
  • VISTA members must be at least 18 years old
  • United States citizens, nationals, or legal residents.
  • Successfully complete a criminal background check.
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
  • Political advocacy, organizing, or demonstration while on VISTA duty, or while perceived to be on duty, is prohibited.
  • While public transportation is available, a car is recommended.

At the completion of VISTA service, members can choose between a Segal Education Award (approximately $6,495) or cash stipend (approximately $1,800), will receive one year of non-competitive eligibility for federal positions, and will receive lifetime eligibility for graduate-level scholarships and fellowships at schools across the country.
