Stewart Clifton

Stewart Clifton is an attorney and registered lobbyist for the TN Alliance for Legal Services. He is also a registered lobbyist and/or consultant for other nonprofit organizations, including Tennessee Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, Alzheimer’s Tennessee, TN Association for Adult Day Services, League of Women Voters of TN, Center for Nonprofit Management, TN Association for Children’s Early Education and others. He was a founding board member of the Sycamore Institute and a longtime board member of the Healing Trust. He also served as a Metro Nashville Council Member for 12 years and a Planning Commissioner for 16 years.

He received a BA in political science from Vanderbilt (’73) and a JD from Vanderbilt Law School (1976). Stewart began his career as a staff attorney in Nashville for what is now the Legal Aid Society. He has worked as executive director, legal counsel and public policy director for Tennessee nonprofit groups, including working with legal aid programs in various capacities for several decades and serving as TALS executive director for over 12 years, prior to establishing a government relations practice.
