Job Description for Wardrobe Supervisor

 

Reports To: Costume Shop Manager

Area of Responsibility: Artistic/Production

 

Position Summary: The Wardrobe Supervisor’s focus is to give wardrobe and dressing support to all Company, NB2, and School of Nashville Ballet dancers for all productions held at the Martin Center, TPAC, and other venues.  The Wardrobe Supervisor will secure and manage all dressers needed for all productions for the main Company, NB2, and the School of Nashville Ballet. The Wardrobe Supervisor works closely with the Costume Shop Manager, Artistic Director, and Director of Production to coordinate all wardrobe needs during each production for the main Company, NB2, and the School of Nashville Ballet.

Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Supervises, schedules, and organizes the wardrobe crew during prep and dress rehearsals
  • Create and maintain dressing room/backstage wardrobe supplies and load in, run, and strike shows
  • Assist performers in dressing into costumes and facilitate quick changes
  • Maintain a calm, professional demeanor for performers in your care
  • Check-in and review costumes before each dress rehearsal and performance and check out and retrieve costumes after each dress rehearsal and performance.
  • Coordinates the care, management, and organization of finished costumes during dress rehearsals and performances
  • Creates costume change and dress plot
  • Supervises the creation of dressing cards/sheets and costume check-in sheets
  • Restock costumes at the end of the production after the strike in a timely manner
  • Maintains and organizes Costume Stock as needed
  • Handles all company shoe needs, including but not limited to ordering, inventory, and distribution to dancers
  • Processes costume rentals as needed
  • Manages time in an effective manner
  • Maintains an organized workspace
  • Attends rehearsals and run-throughs as necessary
  • Attend weekly shop and production meetings as necessary
  • Consult with other team members and Costume Shop Manager concerning problems and their possible solutions as scheduled.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Costume Shop Manager or Director of Production.

Qualifications

Work Requirements and Qualifications:

Education: Minimum of BA or BFA in costuming or similar arts education or equivalent professional experience to be considered to be an expert in this field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of a variety of costume construction techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in costume construction and maintenance
  • Prior backstage costume experience
  • Basic knowledge of costume and fashion history
  • Knowledge of and experience in basic laundry and fabric cleaning techniques, supplies, and equipment
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to work as a team player
  • Knowledge of and experience in basic hand and sewing techniques.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and reprioritize.
  • Working knowledge of various sewing machines, sergers, and other tools of the trade.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Experience: 3-5 years in a costuming position with demonstrable patterning and draping work or extensive build work.

Equipment: Knowledge of various sewing machines and tools used in a costume shop and their safe use. Basic knowledge of general office equipment.
