Position Summary

The Arts & Business Council is at an exciting moment of growth and we need an energetic, community-oriented critical thinker to develop and grow our roster of 200+ professional volunteers. Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Volunteer Services Specialist is an integral part of the Arts & Business Council’s programs team and will oversee our cornerstone program: Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA). VLPA provides critical and necessary pro bono legal and business services to artists of all disciplines, as well as creative entrepreneurs and emerging nonprofit arts organizations in the state of Tennessee. In addition, the Volunteer Services Specialist will establish and nurture working relationships with individuals and organizations whose volunteer contributions can support the mission and strategy of the Arts & Business Council through its other programs including Education for the Creative Community, Periscope: Artist Entrepreneur Training, and more. This role must develop a high-level understanding of the Arts & Business Council’s mission and programs in order to “connect the dots” for volunteers across our programs and services.

Job Responsibilities

Typical duties will include, but are not limited to:

Programmatic (60%)

  • Manage the VLPA program year-round, including client screening and referrals to volunteers
  • Recruit and sustain relationships with law firms and volunteer professionals in various relevant legal practice and business expertise areas to support VLPA needs
  • Plan and execute quarterly in-person legal, business, and tax clinics to reach new constituents in our service area
  • Support Director of Programs and Program Coordinator by assisting in planning legal-related Education workshops (Continuing Legal Education), as needed
  • Oversee the monthly Bradley Black-Owned Small Business and Nonprofit Legal Clinic
  • Oversee annual AmericanaFest conference partnership with the Americana Music Association

 

Community Outreach (25%)

  • Expand VLPA by implementing a strategy to identify, cultivate, and engage additional business service professionals in fields including, but not limited to: accounting, finance, human resources, information technology, and marketing
  • With Marketing Consultant, prepare and coordinate content for email and social media channels to promote and expand VLPA as well as other volunteer opportunities with the Arts & Business Council
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with current and future volunteer partners by speaking at or representing the Arts & Business Council at external events, as needed
  • Attend local and regional events to increase visibility and recruit volunteers

 

Administration (10%) 

  • Maintain accurate and current VLPA case records in Google Drive and Salesforce case management system
  • Perform detailed data entry related to volunteers and engagement, and utilize available data to analyze,  document, and promote volunteer needs and opportunities (hours served, testimonials, etc.)
  • Design cohesive training materials, effective operating systems, processes, and norms for a volunteer program that has grown organically
  • Develop volunteer recognition opportunities to improve volunteer effectiveness and retention across all of the Arts & Business Council’s programs

 

Fundraising (5%)

  • With Director of Programs and Development Manager, explore volunteer initiatives as avenues for potential donorship
  • Support the Development Manager with organizational fundraising efforts by creating and implementing a strategy to convert volunteers and firms to donors and partners
  • Assist Development Manager with grant applications and reporting related to VLPA 
  • Participate in the Arts & Business Council’s annual fundraising events: Arts Immersion, planned in conjunction with a volunteer committee through the Nashville Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, and Nash Art Bash, planned in conjunction with a committee of community volunteers

Qualifications

Position Requirements & Qualifications

The Volunteer Services Specialist will be a natural connector and “people person” who understands the value of community support and volunteerism, while simultaneously being able to manage a high-volume administrative program. This dynamic individual will imagine new avenues of in kind support and understand how to methodically and diligently build relationships that result in increased efficiency of our services as well as increased visibility in the community. 

 

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working in a nonprofit or business setting preferred
  • Paralegal experience a plus
  • Volunteer coordination/management experience a plus
  • Past experience in the arts a plus

  • Understanding of and appreciation for the Arts & Business Council’s mission and the capacity to communicate that mission effectively and persuasively
  • Cultural competence and experience working with the Arts & Business Council’s communities and stakeholders
  • A commitment to ensuring racial and cultural equity in all Arts & Business Council policies and practices
  • Passion for serving and building relationships across the Greater Nashville arts and business communities, including artists, arts nonprofits, arts supporters, and creative businesses
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities
  • Dynamic self-starter with a high degree of professional independence and ability to exercise impeccable judgement with minimal guidelines
  • High degree of customer service skills and proven ability to work with a variety of people and environments
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of office software including Microsoft Office and GSuite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc.)
  • Familiarity with task management software such as Asana, Basecamp, or Slack a plus
  • Comfort using databases or CRM systems — Salesforce experience a plus, but not required

 

Environmental Conditions & Physical Demands

  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms; use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations. The Arts & Business Council employs a flexible, hybrid work model with most office hours currently spent in the employee’s preferred remote work location. Some work events may be outside or in temperature-controlled offices/venues. 
  • Some work outside of typical office hours may be required during the planning and execution of special events, fundraisers, or other external community events.. Some light local travel to meet potential volunteers may also be required.
  • The work environment will require walking, standing, bending and carrying of items weighing 1-15 lbs. Also, the employee must have manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

Status: Full-Time/Exempt

Salary: Commensurate with experience, with an expected range of $42,500-$45,000

Benefits: Health, Dental & Vision Insurance, Paid Vacation, Remote/Hybrid Schedule

Hours: 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, plus periodic events outside of regular office hours
