Job Summary

On behalf of the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church Disaster Recovery Connection (DRC), the Volunteer Coordinator administers all aspects of the TWK Disaster Recovery Team’s volunteer project including recruiting, training, and assigning volunteers to work with individuals and families who are recovering from disasters throughout the geographic area under the TWK Conference’s guidance.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Works with the Long-Term Recovery Director (LTRD) to understand and identify available opportunities and needs for volunteers.
  2. Recruits volunteer staff to fit these roles using a variety of resources and techniques.
  3. Gathers information about each volunteer’s skills, availability, and goals; matches volunteers with appropriate opportunities based on this data.
  4. Schedules, coordinates, and assigns volunteers to appropriate volunteer opportunities.
  5. Regularly communicates with volunteers to ensure placement is a good fit for individual’s skills and goals.
  6. Maintains files, records, applications, and other data concerning volunteer program.
  7. Drafts, maintains, and publishes guidelines, best practices, and procedures for volunteer program.
  8. Coordinates volunteer recognition and appreciation events and activities.
  9. Embraces the diversity and inclusion goals of the Conference.

Qualifications

  • Mission Mindset: An appreciation of the nature and mission of the Church is essential. Conduct business in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the TWK Annual Conference.  Active membership in a United Methodist Church is preferred but not required.
  • Interpersonal Skills:  Capacity to work collaboratively, collegially and develop rapport with a wide diverse, variety of individuals and leaders.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication. Able to speak in a public forum.
  • Organizational Skills: High ability to prioritize tasks and processes. Ability to plan, develop, and coordinate multiple tasks and projects, and conversations with volunteers and external partners.
  • Time Management Skills: Effective and efficient use of time, talent and resources.
  • Computer Savvy: Proficient in the use of computers, including Microsoft Office. Working knowledge of databases.
  • Dependability: Able to meet deadlines and be reliable.
  • Leadership skills: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, encourage others, assign to volunteer opportunities, and provide training.
  • Maintain confidences: Commitment to complete confidentiality and high degree of integrity. 
  • Conflict of interest: Possess no outside business interest that may conflict with the client or the TWK Conference. Able to maintain ethical conduct in accordance with Conference policy.
  • Conflict Resolution: Able to work calmly and effectively to resolve conflicts in sensitive situations; effective listening and interviewing skills; cultural competence relative to the population served.
  • Helping/Customer Service Orientation: Participate in a culture of hospitality and consistency for all processes associated with volunteer coordination.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • College degree in a related field and/or seminary education preferred.

Additional Information

Benefits

  • Full-time, temporary* for up to 90 days.
  • Must be able to work remotely, reside within the TWK conference area, with some area travel and team meetings.
  • Upon satisfactory completion of this period, and if the longevity of disaster recovery project needs remain, an offer for full employment status may be extended.
  • Have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to be able to drive long distances throughout the service area as needed for meetings.
  • Temporary positions are not eligible for conference health plan and pension benefits.
  • Mobile office equipment, supplies, and cellular phone allowance will be provided.
  • Passing a background check and successful completion of online training process is required.
  • Ability to travel regularly between assigned areas, the Conference office, and to other sites as needed.
  • No unemployment benefits are available to conference employees, based on TCA rules.
