Job Summary

The Advocate serves as primary case handler for clients in a variety of substantive legal areas, as well as
support the cases handled by attorneys; create and maintain positive working relationships with
organizations in the service area and state which would benefit the client population; prepare and
present community education workshops and conduct outreach events about Legal Aid Society’s
mission and services.

This position is funded in part by, and in collaboration with, one or more grants. Personnel must adhere
to goals and outcomes detailed in the grant contract. This position is funded for the duration of the
grant and subsequent renewal may result in modification of job duties and responsibilities

Job Responsibilities

-Interview applicants and, in consultation with supervising attorney, determine level of service to
be provided.
• Serve as primary case handler and advocate for clients in a variety of substantive legal areas for
clients, as assigned.
• Assess the needs of clients, providing relevant information and making appropriate referrals for
additional LAS cases as well as other community resources.
• Create and maintain positive working relationships with organizations in the service area and
state which would benefit the client population.
• Maintain accurate and orderly client files, adhering to case management database policies and
guidelines.
• Support the casework of attorneys as assigned.
• Carefully follow directions and promptly respond to requests of attorneys and other LAS staff.
• Prepare and present community education workshops and conduct outreach events about LAS’
mission and services.
• Participate on internal committees, practice groups, and other efforts to promote and improve
LAS’ operation.
• Learn responsibilities and be prepared to cover other positions as needed.
• Perform other duties as requested by the Executive Director, Managing Attorney, or supervisor.
• Comply with program policies and regulations of the Legal Services Corporation and other
funders.
• Comply with all applicable organizational, professional, and legal requirements for
confidentiality

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • experience with orders of protection, domestic violence, and family law issues and/or experience working with low income persons.
  • degree or background in social work preferred. MSW ideal.
  • fluency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus.
