Job Responsibilities

General Responsibilities:

  • Promote TSPN, the goals of TSPN, and to enhance the image of TSPN as the official voice for the Suicide prevention field in Tennessee. 
  • Represents TSPN programming efforts at appropriate meetings, coalitions, and events. In coordination with the TAADAS Executive Director, serves as the media spokesperson and thought leader for suicide prevention in Tennessee.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships with funding sources, customers, legislators, government agencies, partnering agencies, community task forces, advisory councils, volunteers, and other relevant organizations.
  • Supervises the overall operation of TSPN, including the control, utilization, and conservation of TSPN’s physical and financial assets, and the recruitment and direction of its staff.
  • Administer the identification and the operationalization of program area goals and issues for Regional Directors, advisory council, and volunteers.
  • Serves as part of the TAADAS leadership team.
  • Advocate for suicide prevention throughout Tennessee in all coalition work, legislative initiatives and grant opportunities.
  • Collaborate with TDMHSAS in identifying needs, developing strategic objectives to reduce suicide, engaging community leaders and volunteers on suicide prevention, measuring and reporting outcomes, etc.
  • Implement and report results from evidence-based trainings on suicide prevention, especially as it relates to new grant and program opportunities
  • Implement and report results from prevention, intervention, and postvention (i.e., post-suicide debriefings) programs.
  • Publish the annual State of Suicide in Tennessee report.
  • Oversee and implement the activities and deliverables for any funding received by TSPN.
  • Utilize a public health approach by making use of data to inform change and advocacy strategies and to structure TSPN activities.
  • Attend annual national suicide prevention conference and grantee meetings
  • Develops short-term and long-term program goals and objectives based on the Tennessee Strategies for Suicide Prevention for Advisory Council Executive Committee review and assures annual update of goals based on changing needs and progress toward objectives.
  • Convenes the Executive Committee of the Advisory Council and keep them informed; provides consultation to the Council as needed.
  • Assures that program information and reports are forwarded to the Executive Committee, funding sources and regulatory agencies as applicable, and that reports are timely and accurate.
  • Reports to the Executive Committee with a synopsis of the Executive Director’s and the agency’s activities, to include developments and commentary relevant to TSPN’s purpose. 
  • Assures the coordination of regional Advisory Council activities; coordinates and attends TSPN meetings and other unscheduled meetings when needed and as requested.
  • Ensures and provides timely notices of meetings and important announcements.
  • Provides input on fiscal resources for TSPN to assure that funding is sufficient to meet service needs and that funds are used efficiently and effectively.
  • Review TSPN financial reports and budgets with the TAADAS Executive Director; assist in developing the TSPN budget.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, evaluation of work performance, and dismissal of employees in collaboration with TAADAS’ human resource staff.
  • Assures that TSPN maintains compliance with all contractual obligations, laws, rules, or orders of all governmental and regulatory bodies having jurisdiction over its programs or its operation; Reports compliance issues to supervisor as well as to the TSPN Advisory Council Executive Committee.
  • Assures that legislative activity is in accordance with parameters prescribed by law for not-for-profit organizations and by contractual obligations with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services or other funders.         
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises the TSPN Operations Director and TSPN Regional Directors.

 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social service (i.e., psychology, public health, social work, etc.) with work experience for four years or more.  A Master’s degree in a social service or management field is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of suicide prevention or crisis services experience in addition to the related degree is preferred.
  • These qualifications express the minimum standards for education and experience.  Other combinations of education and experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify an applicant for consideration.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations and programs related to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. 
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public, funding sources, and co-workers, including the ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. 
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) as demonstrated by the ability to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly.  This should also include proven written skills in grant writing, grant reporting, news articles, journal publications, research, or similar technical writing.
  • Excellent organizational, management, and creative skills as evidenced by the ability to successfully translate abstract ideas and concepts into concrete and measurable outcomes. 
  • Working knowledge and strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with additional proficiencies in data management and program management considered to be optimal.
  • Excellent oratory and presentation skills to large and small audiences.
  • Working knowledge or certifications in evidence-based curriculum such as QPR, ASIST, AMSR, safeTALK, etc. is preferred.
